rooted my first cutting!

I am excited that I sucessfully rooted my first cutting. It is/was an unidentified rose, but a poster here suggested it was New Dawn and he seems to be correct. Too bad I'm not crazy about this rose.

It took less than 8 weeks and the cup was packed with roots. So, if anyone wants to try their first, New Dawn is probably an easy one to root.

It may also be that subsequent pitchers just plain are larger than the previous. That seems to have happened with my Neps, without cutting any off.

I just got up, and checked my cuttings, and I have a root on one of the brugmansia. I just put them on the heat mat 3 days ago, what a diffrence. Barry, they are as snug as a bug under one of the umbrella greenhouses, my baby plumeria are under another one. We do not get our cold weather until February. I will check them the next time I go down, which will be after Christmas. If they are not thriving, I will bring them back and keep inside. The dark yellow, bloom nonstop thruout the winter. This year has me worried with all the acorns on the ground. Last year I just lost my copper plants, bromeliad, and very small plumeria plants. This year with all the acorns on the ground, I am afraid we will have a much harder winter then usual. The farmers Almanac said South Texas is in for a very mild winter. You do not have to remove the lower leaves. Just make sure there is a node buried or in contact with the soil. The bottom of the leaves can get slightly buried. There's not really a consensus on whether it's better to have longer or shorter cuttings, so you're going to get a mix of answers on that. If you really want to push its potential for rooting, you could lay that short one flat along the soil and it will be able to root from multiple nodes if it likes. But I feel some Hoyas take to this approach better than others and I'm not sure how polyneura is. I think it is just mottled. Sometimes mine grows nice consistently dark leaves and other times they look more like that. I think it has to do with the light since they're all dark now. I provided a link to the silvery leaf polyneura below, although it's hard to see the silver exactly in a photograph... (at least for me) Good luck with the rooting! I'd be afraid to try it with this minimal protection. Me, I'd dig it up and keep it in a more protected spot over the winter. Or I'd cover it with a lot of wood chips or something like that and hope to find something alive when I uncovered it in the spring. Good luck. Hay.

Congratulations! Another easy one is The Fairy, a polyantha with large clusters of small light pink blooms. In many areas it as a good choice for a no spray garden.

Thanks for sharing in my excitement, everyone. You certainly are an understanding bunch.

Vettin, I filled a cup with potting soil and sand. I stuck the cutting in without rooting hormone. I buried the cup in the ground next to a mostly shaded fence and watered every few days.

I did not cover the cup because we have humid weather here. I will probably use rooting hormone in the future for its anti-fungal properties.

Thanks, I would like to try rooting my own. I tried it once with rooting hormone and it did not work. I will try again with some ogrs. When is the best time to do this? When did you root yours?

Yep, good going....I think New Dawn, or more likely Dr. W. Van Fleet, was the first rose I rooted as well.
