overwintering tiny rooted hyd.

I managed to root my first hydrangea cutting in mid to late summer. It was from my 'royal red' hydrangea bush that came as a very tiny little plant in the spring and did not bloom this year (although it has grown significantly in the last several weeks and I expect it to bloom this next summer). The cutting I rooted is very tiny, and has just begun to grow a couple of new leaves. It is in the ground, and I am very worried about the coming winter months. When I give it a gentle tug, it seems to be very firmly rooted into the ground. I cut the bottom off of a gallon milk jug and covered the plant with it, leaving the cap off for ventilation. Do you think this will be sufficient? We don't usually have brutal winters here--just a couple of snows and freezes here and there.
