Seeds of Change is offering 10 free packs of seeds. All you have to do is sign up for them and pay the postage, which is $4.99. They'll send your seeds in 2-6 weeks, and they choose which seeds to send.

Hi all, What a coincidence! I just bought a packet of nigra hollyhock seeds online tonight and was wondering if it was too late for me to plant them this year for flowering next year. IÂm afraid IÂve never gardened from seed before but I love hollyhocks and really wanted to try my luck at growing the chocolate variety. Itsy, I noticed you were from KY zone 6; I just moved this year to Bloomington, IN so I thought with our similar climates you would know if itÂs too late for me to plant my seeds. Nope, not I. They say they should be received by May 15th on their FB page, so I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon before I call them. The thing is, last time I called, they didn't even have a way of tracking my order. I realize it's free, but you'd think I'd be entered into a system somehow and somewhere... Next year they should go back to offering free seeds to charities instead, since that seemed to work just fine. I certainly won't be ordering from them in the future.

I have had the same exact dilemma this year. I am doing raised beds/square foot gardening for the first time (previously, just self-watering containers). I set up a drip irrigation system, with one .5 gph dripper in the center of each square. The water coverage seems to be erratic - some square have not sprouted anything at all, while the neighboring square, with the same exact seeds planted in it, has sprouted just fine. I've also already lost my young cucumber plants for reasons I can only attribute to lack of water. Unfortunately, my plot is in a community garden that I can only get to once a week. Like you, I have gone from watering once a day, to twice, and now to four times. I hate to waste water, but hate more to waste my plants. I think the ideal thing is to manually water until the plants have matured a little. We know that the drippers spread moisture cononically down into the soil, and my belief is that, until the roots have grown deeper and wider, they won't meet up with that area of moisture (unless the dripper is right on top of them). I think ideally, one would water manually until the plants have matured a bit. That being said, my lettuce, chard, beets and carrots seem to the doing well. My peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers need help. I will soon add some additional drippers into the system to provide water directly on top of their roots.

THis round robin is now closed to any new participants. I have decided to extend it to 25 people since hummingbirddaisy (Tina) is donating some seeds. Since I'm not sure exactly how many seeds TIna is donating, anyone after #20 on this list may run a small risk of not getting the box sent to them. (When the box is empty, the robin stops flying.) I could be confused. Haven't had my morning coffee yet. I read through the "Sowing Millions" rules and here's what it said:

"(II) select one (1) of the following two (2) levels of Seed Packets:
Level 1: Home Gardener Ã¯Â¿Â½ 25 Seed Packets (approximately 6,250 seeds) for $4.99 shipping and handling fee; or Level 2: Community group, school or non-profit organization Ã¯Â¿Â½ 100 Seed Packets (approximately 25,000 seeds) for $14.99 shipping and handling fee;"

I'll plan to receive 10 packets and if they do send 25 it won't hurt my feelings either. ; )

Storm, It clearly says 25 but I heard "ten" on the TV show, or maybe he said "they'll "send packets of seed" and I though he said "they'll send ten packets of seeds"....lol

It was early and I hadn't poured any caffeine into my sleepy self yet.

It will be fun receiving the seeds and seeing what everybody gets.

I've bought seeds from SOC for years and years, but haven't bought as many in recent years as I used to.

Done! But, my husband tells me that after this, I have to stop acquiring seeds. I have tons. But, I plan on freezing them so they will still be good for next year.

Kelly - we need to try to make sure your DH doesn't talk to mine much. Mine is threatening to stage an intervention. I'm going to have to make sure I get to the mail-box before him in a few weeks!!! There are LOTS of worse things to hide from your husband, right???? LOL!

There sure are worse things to hide from the hub! And I always tell him that he won't be complaining when he's eating fresh vegetables in the summer. Now if only this weather would cooperate, I could prove to him that my seed shopping pays off that much quicker.

It will be interesting to see what seeds everyone receives.

Hopefully this will run more smoothly than the ill-conceived tomato seed giveway that somebody---was it Campbell's Soup?---did a couple of years ago.

What happened with the Campbell's one, Dawn? I've done theirs a couple of years but I've had 0% germination both times.

Someone posted it on Slick Deals. My heart sank when I saw it there. Those people are vultures and will just grab anything cheap to Ebay it. I'm sure they got tens of thousands of seed orders within a couple of hours of the SD post.

I hope that MOST of the people who got in on this AMAZING deal are legitimate gardeners.

What you experienced with the "Grow Your Own Soup" seeds is exactly what many others who received the tomato seeds experienced---very poor germination, if any germination at all. I suspect they sent out old seed or seed that had not been stored properly because nothing else would explain why so many experienced gardeners had such bad germination.

Carol, I'm not surprised the seed went so quickly. When I saw it on The Today Show, I was on SOC's website within 1 minute, trying to beat the crowd before they gave away all the seed. Then I came here and posted about it so anyone who saw that thread could beat the crowd too.

Jo, You're welcome. It was my pleasure to be able to share news of this wonderful deal with everyone here. Like you, I hope the seed went to real gardeners who will use it, and not to people who will just put the seed on Ebay and sell it or something.

I assume SOC got tons of free 'advertising' out of this.

Did they send out confirmations? Probably not, I didn't get one. Just the confirmation on the website that my order went thru.

If I missed out, that's okay, but if I didn't would be happy to send the seeds to someone who can really use them. I don't know that I will be gardening on a large enough scale next year to use the seeds. And, I still have TONS of seed from the swap and from my own orders.

Let me know. Diane, can send the seeds to you if you want them.

Aw, thanks, Susan! I did manage to get an order through so assume I'll get my share -- and would feel guilty for double-dipping when it was a very limited offer (and secretly fear that the Mother Nature would set my garden ablaze this year to teach me a lesson for being selfish!). You can wait & see if someone here missed out or save them for this winter's swap. That was very sweet of you to offer, though!

By the way, I didn't get any email confirmation, either. I did get the confirmation on the site like you did plus saw the charge on my card not long after.
