Garden Conservancy Open Day July 22

Hello everybody!

I am thinking of sneaking off to the Berkshires to view the GC's 3 open days gardens on Sunday, 22 July. Would anyone like to carpool with me? Or is anyone thinking of going to the open gardens in CT or NY on those dates? Trying not to go too far afield, but need to get "my fix".

Come on, come on, come on Marie! Let's go! 2 gardens in Richmond, 1 in Stockbridge -- 1 also in Columbia County NY, which is supposed to be nearby. Who knows...maybe we'd even have time/energy to go to Naumkeag? Or to Edith Wharton's home and gardens? Or...??? Come on! I'm in Newton -- you are in Lexington, right? Shall I pick you up?... :) Any other takers?

Monique, you should have received your Directory two weeks ago, at least, so I suspect something went awry. They're right across the border from you in Cold Spring, NY, so perhaps a phone call would help - they have always been most co-operative whenever I've needed to call them in the past. BTW, Stonecrop Gardens, the home of The Garden Conservancy, has six (6) Open Days this season - it is a highly unique garden, well worth the visit. . . Carl

I would strongly advise a visit to Frog Pond Farm in Hunterdon County on June 2 and 3. Ruby and Martin are neighbors of mine and have a simply lovely garden and are wonderful people. Here's a funny OT story: When I first moved here, I had a dog who was depressed from being moved from a suburban to a rural setting, so I got him a friend. Well, the friend was just plain bad - she was a terrier mix who could worm her way through the smallest opening in the fence. The first time she ran away, she was brought home by the local police department, sitting proudly in the backseat of the police car. The second time she ran away, she ended up at the pound. I went down to pay her bail and was asked if I wanted to know where she was found. That didn't sound good, but I hesitantly said yes. Well, she been found at a neighbor's house. She'd got through their fence and into their yard. Their house had a cat door which this dog used to gain entry to the house. From there, she found the owners asleep in their bedroom, got in bed with them and began licking the husband's face. He pushed her away once, thinking it was his cat. But she persisted and the second time he reached out to give her a good shove and realized that the hair he felt was not his cat's hair. I guess he turned on the light and saw this dog sitting on his bed with a big smile on her face. They called the police who came and got her and took her to the pound. It was Martin's and Ruby's house the dog had entered. A few days after this episode, they were having an open garden so I stopped by to apologize for the dog's bad behavior. They were so kind and just laughed about it. Since that time, Ruby has been gracious in sharing her knowledge and some of her plants with me.

It was just coincidence that I visited two of the NH gardens last year when they were part of garden tours to benefit charities. Both were amazing and worth a drive. I think membership in the Garden Conservancy is about the same as what I paid to go on those two tours last year. It looks well worth doing.

aw shucks...gee whiz....well, ok. We need to look into the whole ticket business, and buying the conservancy's tour book, which has the directions and so on. I'd love to go with you, and do appreciate the offer to drive, as I spend half my week on the road.

Yay! I have the book. Never been to open days before, but don't we buy tix at the gardens? I'll go to the website and check it out. Hurray! THANKS!

The garden tour as stated in the title is not until the 22nd but I am glad you brought this subject up as I think we need to nudge idabean to get her camera ready, now mayalena is a mom of young kidlets so I would guess she would have a handle on the camera thing. Are you ladies now feeling the peer pressure, we have high expectations...shucks I wish we had a video of your car trip across the state!! Well we are all living vicariously through you both so have a wonderful time and we look forward to your report.

umm, duh... somehow I really did know that. But I've managed to miss a gear somewhere between first and... all the rest.

:) (I actually DO know how to drive a "stick").

Just make sure the camera has a good zoom lens and you'll be able to see just fine. kt

just cracking up over here.... I'll unearth my camera, in hopes that Marie will get the glasses, as she is the navigator. If we don't get there, no pics....

Give me a recommendation for a camera good for gardening type pix, digital of course, for less than $200 (that's only two zeros)

Nikon Coolpix S6, about $170-180 with 256MB card included at Costco.
Light weight, motion stabilizer and not too many chachkes you pay for, but never use.
Info is accurate as of May'2007.

I received a Canon A630 for Chirstmas and love it. It is at Circuit city and I have a link to it below. Other cameras in the family are the Canon A540. That takes nice pics too, but not as many bells and whistles. Not sure Circuit City has the best price, but you can check around.

Circuit City doesn't carry the Nikon S6, but it has L10 for 119. Do you know anything about it? Do these specs seem adequate for my very close to far away point and shoot needs?
