Any place I need to check out in Wisconsin

OK, gotta do a business trip to the land of the frozen tundra, glaciers, wooly mammoths (that one is on my list), and Neanderthals.

Actually, I will be in Appleton, Oshkosh and Fon Du Lac. Won't have much time, but is there a place with gazillions of really cool hostas. (well that far north, they are probably all frozen!).

I also have to get in a round or two of disc golf (pdga.com), probably in Appleton, since they have 4 courses.

Anyhow, if there is a good nursery in that area, please let me know.

Thank you! Well, you won't believe it, but I found myself AND her a Silberlocke at Stein's in Appleton. They are at least 5' in the pot (I am 5'4"). On sale, we got two of them for $100 with 5 year warranties, because I bought their "planting liquid" bottle for $10...so they upped the warranty from 2 years to 5. I'm thinking about springing for another one at that price. I had assumed they were gone, when no one even bought them...go figure!

Nanny2a - If I'm understanding what you wrote the bottom of my lamp shade should be like 20" in diameter? That sounds and looks huge? Did I do that right? I measured from the bottom to the bottom of the socket base and got 22". Hmmm.. Threed - Oh no I wouldn't light them. They don't fit anyhow. I'll have to head to a lamp store with the lamp in hand. Chloe - I don't know that the tea lights would look right. I don't think I even have any to try right now though. Trailrunner - Thank you for those sites! The candle covers sound way better than the folded paper idea. ha I like the look of the candle cover things. What do you put on the top part? Or nothing because it's covered? Here's the ebay lamp I was talking about. I emailed the seller asking about the height of the shade. The bottom of it is 17" the top is 13". Lamp height is 35" I bought this shade just to get an idea. This is made so that you don't have to use a harp so I think it sits too low and it's not wide/big enough. This shade is 14" at the bottom, 10" top and height is 9.25". So I'm thinking I need one similar to the size of the ebay one? I'm going to try and find some lamp stores this week. Hopefully someone can help me and what I need is all right there.

Pretty much the entire southern half of Wisconsin is "farmy," but here in Dane County, some of the most interesting scenery lies in the hills and valleys around Mount Horeb, only about 15 miles west of Madison. Cambridge, Wisconsin, about 15 miles east of Madison, has a large pottery factory & sales outlet. Madison itself has the Saturday Farmer's Market, located on the Capital Square, where you can actually talk to the farmers who raised the animals/grew the vegetables. Lake Michigan is 70 miles to the east. For the full effect of Lake Superior, I would suggest a trip to the Keweenaw peninsula, through Eagle Harbor & Copper Harbor.

Yes, my ceilings are 8 feet. I would have to leave off the glass part at the top. We are opeing up the wall which is where the penninsula will be, then a few feet out from the penninsula my ceilings raise to 16 feet in the living room with 2 skylights in the celing and lots of natural light. I really thought this would prevent the darks wood from becoming to heavy, also combining it with the lighter elemtns it helps brighten things up. I do want to put in handscraped hickory hardwood floors. This would be throughout the kitchen, dining room, and living room. I like the tile but I want the flow of having the floors all the same. I knew there would be people who don't like this kitchen. It's definitely not for eveyone, and I respect that. It makes a very strong statement. You can correct me on the eclectic if you like. I call that mixing the different elements, details, finishes, and embellishments. I do agree it's tuscan, antique looking. I am worried about using it in "my smaller space" That is why I posted here to get ideas. I appreciate all suggestions and all thoughts negative or positive. I do think not having enough space is a huge concern. One reason I thought this style would work is because we are opening this space up and removing a wall. Our living room is large. There are only two of us living here. Empty nesters. I can't see the expense of expanding. Not in this econmic climate and the area I live in. I was hoping by opening up the space it would give us a nice entertaining area. It is a load bearing wall so a support column is needed at the end of the penninsula. For this reason I really can't have an island. I am limited, I do have to be realistic. That's not always easy!

Mark Mulzer has a wonderful hosta garden in Fond du Lac...i will email you his number...maybe he would be available for a visit...

House of Hosta has hundreds of hostas. I've ordered from Ron and his plants are great. I understand there is a display garden as well, but I have not been there. Green Bay is about one-half hour north of Appleton. There's no web site as far as I know.

Agree with Mark, House of Hosta is a premier destination. Best phone for appt. 920-434-2847. Display gardens are all over the place. Sturdy field grown stock and lots of OS.

I used to live in Menasha, right next to Appleton and I agree, House of Hosta is the place to go...not sure any place is the place in October! Hopefully you are speaking of a May 2009 trip?

I live in Appleton. If you want to see what two huge hail storms can do to your hostas you are more than welcome to visit. I agree, the House of Hosta is the place to go, it's a good 35-45 minute drive north of Appleton. It has a Green Bay address, but it's actually in Suamico. Most other places have cleared their perennials out or closed for the season. Your best bet might be to call Mark's place in Fond Du Lac.

There are some really nice disc golf places in our area. My friend just built one last year in Berlin (west of Appleton). I've played in O'Hauser park in Menasha, but I am sure the Plamann Park course is better. If you need any directions or anything just email me.

Just back from a weekend jaunt. Thanks to everyone for the input. I am landing in GB, so Ron's may work. I'll call them tomorrow to see if there is still anything to see, and maybe buy!
