Great lamp! The brass is subdued. (I have a couple of brass lamps that I love and I think they look fine in their locations.) Take the lamp to a good lamp/shade shop and see what looks good with respect to height and width. You can change the harp height to accommodate a taller shade although the original harp gives a good idea of the height of the original shade. If the shade bottom is at the bottom of the socket, you might try putting candles in the holders. I think it might look good. Would like to see pictures in any case.

Andee - I'll have to check around the area where I work. There has to be a lamp store somewhere there.

I tried to put candles in the holder things... they're an inch in diameter, the candles are too small to stand up. Do they make candles that thick? Also it looks like there's a bit of glass around the top of the one, like there was something else there before?

The brass lamp is 34" tall. The lamp the gold shades goes to is 29".

Sheesharee, here's some tips that might help you find the right shade for your "new" lamp....I found this info searching on the Internet, because I've always wondered how to measure to get the right fit.

Shopping for a lampshade can be frustrating if you don'know the proper size shade for your lamp base.

To choose the correct height and width for your shade you should first measure the lamp base from the bottom of the base to the top. The top of the base is where the bottom of the electrical socket is attached to your lamp base. You then measure the height of the Harp. That's the device, usually made of metal, which the shade sits atop with a finial to secure the top of the shade to the Harp ). The Harp is shaped like a harp and it attaches to the device on each side of your lamp socket.

Measure for the lamp shade's bottom width by taking the measurement from the bottom of the lamp base to the bottom of the socket's base. The shade you choose should have a bottom diameter no less than 2 inches the height of the lamp base and no more than 2 inches than the height of the lamp base. For instance, if your lamp base is 20 inches tall, the bottom width of your shade should be no less than 18 inches wide nor more than 22 inches wide.

The top of your shade should be close to one-half the width of the bottom of the shade. Tall vintage lamps that previously had a cylindrical shade will usually look better with the same cylindrical shape of lamp shade, so your bottom and top widths will be the same. The Chinese urn type lamp looks better with the Pagoda type shade on the inverted V, as in /\ shape.

The correct Height of your shade should not exceed the height of the Harp, plus or minus 1/2-inch. Measure the height of the Harp from the base of the lamp socket (where the Harp is attached) to the top of the Harp where your Lamp Shade will rest. If you have a 12-inch Harp your shade should not be less than 11-1/2 inches nor more than 12-1/2 inches tall.

One other suggestion: Be aware that the lamp shade buyer can change the size (height) of the Harp already on an existing lamp if finding the right size of lamp shade is difficult . The better lamp shops sell Harps of all sizes. Some old-fashioned Hardware stores continue to sell them. You can sometimes get lucky and find them online and on eBay. Forget discount stores, as you'll just waste your time and gasoline looking. (Don't you all just love spending a Saturday afternoon strolling the aisles of old-fashioned hardware stores? The treasures one finds there!) Harps usually sell for $2.49 to $4.99 in good lamp shops. You might want to take your old Harp with you when shopping for a new one.

As a precaution for safety reason, make sure you can insert three fingers between the top of your light bulb and the top of the Harp. You will need that much room to insert, attach or remove a light bulb. Caution: Lamp Shade distributors usually caution the buyer to not allow the lamp bulb to be closer than one-inch to the lamp's shade, but I wouldn't have my lampshade be any closer to the light bulb than 3 or 4 inches -- to be on the safe side!

Remember: Measure from the bottom of the lamp base up to the bottom of the socket in order to determine your lamp shade's bottom width and don't forget the 2-inch rule, plus or minus 2-inches!

Remember: Measure the Harp from the bottom of the socket where it attaches to the top of the Harp and and don't forget the 1/2-inch rule - plus or minus 1/1-inch.

Also remember: You can change the size of your lamp's Harp if you are having difficulty buying the right size Shade for your Lamp.

That's a great lamp Sheesharee! A new harp will cost you about ten bucks. Be sure to get the harp and the shade together since there is a relationship between the two. Or, you can get an adjustable harp so it can be tweaked.

Brace yourself for the price of a good lampshade. I had no idea....needed a new shade for my MIL's gargantuan Chinese vase lamp and the darn thing cost me a bit over a hundred bucks. Admittedly, it was huge, and you probably won't need to pay so much. But a great shade will really make that lamp sing and I think it is worth the investment.

Sometimes I have had luck buying shades at Homegoods, but usually for lamps in less important locations like the guest room. (J, I hope you're not reading this!) I still have cheapie shades on the lamps in my LR because I know that to do it right I have to drive about an hour south and spend up a bit. Someday...

Maybe with Nanny's fantastic piece on shades, I will feel more able to choose wisely. Lampshades are kind of like WTs for me...not my forte.

I think if you place candles in the holders you should never light them because the candles smoke would destroy the new shade.. I like the shape of the last shade shown but I think it should come down a bit to hide the electrical socket.
I would go to a speciality lamp store or even a lampshade store. Bring the lamp with you so you can try each shade and finial on before buying anything.

Is it possible the the candle holder is for tea lights? Hmmm..., maybe not, as 1 inch seems small.

I'm heading out the door but I wanted to write quick..

I was looking at the three holder things and I don't think it's glass but glue. I found a lamp on ebay last night that looks very similar but they have electric candles in those. This lamp doesn't have wires running up through.

I can't find candles online that are 1" thick. I was trying to figure out what you would call things you stick in there but wasn't having much luck with the size again. I'm going to take it to a lamp shop I suppose and hopefully someone there can maybe even order parts for it. My sister suggest a quick fix of taking poster board and making it fit the space. You wouldn't see the top under the shade. It will bug me though so I'll have to find another solution.

I'll check out the links and stuff when I get home. I'll also post that pic of the lamp on ebay. If I woudldn't of found this lamp last night I'd be bidding on the ebay one! So similar AND it has a shade! :)

I used Paxton for all of my lamp parts...another great company. They have the candle covers...they have the dripping wax look too. They are very pretty ..I bought 12 of them for all my floor lamps. c

Nanny2a - If I'm understanding what you wrote the bottom of my lamp shade should be like 20" in diameter? That sounds and looks huge? Did I do that right? I measured from the bottom to the bottom of the socket base and got 22". Hmmm..

Threed - Oh no I wouldn't light them. They don't fit anyhow. I'll have to head to a lamp store with the lamp in hand.

Heard back from the ebay lady already. She's saying the shade height is 9 1/4 tall bottom is 17" in diameter and top is 13" in diameter. Again the shade I bought above to try is 9.25" shade height, 14" at the bottom, 10" top. Interesting. I was thinking I would need a taller shade as well but I'm assuming not.

I went downtown yesterday to an antique lamp store where I saw a lamp with a similar "layout" to yours. Instead of wiring the candelabra with sockets where candles used to be placed, a new post and socket (and shade) were added. The store owner said yes, you could put candles there, but the candelabra part was really more for decoration, sort of like a little statue in the case of the one I saw.

Their site had this lamp which is similar to your e-bay one (all electric). The store had a lot of French bronze and marble table lamps (~$1000 per) which could be thought of as an older version of our brass finishes. I think this style of shade would work for your lamp.

Andee - When you say ", a new post and socket was added" do you mean the arms are now electric as well? I could just buy those candle arm cover and up nothing in the top since it will be covered by a shade?

The harp look original but at the same time I wonder if it's too big. When I was holding the shade up to where it should be last night it looked like it needed to be longer or something. Yet the ebay lamp with similar dimensions looks balanced.

No, the candelabra arms weren't wired. The candelabra was mounted on the pedestal part of a lamp, much like you see a figurine on a pedestal lamp. They were less integrated-looking than on your lamp, but very definitely the same idea. The take-home story is that if this very fancy French antique lamp store can leave the candelabra empty of anything, so can you.

About your shade: I don't think it is so much that the shade is not long enough, but rather the bottom and top need to be a couple of inches wider and not so much difference between the top and bottom. Maybe you can make a mock shade out of posterboard. I'm really looking forward to seeing your finished lamp.

Here's my "interesting" and "unique" find (that's what the women in line at the second-hand store called it, LOL!). I plan on re-covering the lamp shade. I saw one just like this in a magazine recently, but it was black. It looked really nice black. I am toying with the idea of painting mine black. I wish I would have bought that magazine, because now I am having a hard time visualizing it.

I used the candle holder thingies cause I have lightbulbs in the 3 arms. Mine are all floor lamps with the large porcelain mogul bulb iin the center. So my candle covers cover the electric works for each of the arms. On yours they would show and look pretty but you would have to look under the shade to see that there was no electric light in there. I think it would look pretty.

Otherwise you could leave them empty or put pretty candles that you never light. Or drill it out and get the pieces you need from Paxton and wire the lamp. It is pretty easy to do.

Yes your shade needs to be bigger. I was surprised but it always takes bigger than you think. c
