New 'Late Season' thread for Local Sales & Specials

It's time to start posting where you find great deals on 'clearance' items, one-man shows getting done for the season, or just new Veggie-Farms or roadstands opening up!

I'll start:

Rte 28 in Pittsfield, NH- (yeah, ok, I'm an idiot. I can't even remember the name of the farm- LOL!) It's right next to the Salty Dog Pottery Barn & Bosco Bell. They just opened on Monday for the season with veggies, etc.

Rte 126 in Barrington at the intersection of 202 (right near the end, anyway) the white farmhouse with goat's milk has put out their table for the season.

"Sandy" on Rte 4 in Northwood (next to the Willow Tree antiques shop- she has the little craft store in her garage- brown colonial w/attached garage) just put out some perennials yesterday, but didn't have anything labeled- everything was 1.25.

Water Street in Strafford- the Albrecht's (I think that's the name)...on the corner where George Foss used to live...where all the accidents are on the sharp corner...just put out some REALLY nice selections yesterday of hosta, cranesbill, and a few others. She'll be having more for sale and veggies according to her DH ;)

Water Street in Strafford- Mr. Reed still has many perennial selections out for sale.

The gal on Range Road (Ridge Rd? The one between Strafford & Northwood heading toward Mr. Mike's) in Northwood has still a few perennials and daylilies. Her sign says she'll be adding lots more, but I haven't seen the selections change much daily.

Pembroke Perennials on 28 in (Pembroke!) had GREAT sale going on last week, but I haven't been there since. Might take a ride down there sometime this week to see if he's got more, but many people were having good luck there (as did I!) and nice end-of-season prices!

Flower Garden Nursery, Sandwich Road, Falmouth has 3 inch lavender @ $1, some great "cutting garden" temperennials $ $2, and Night Phlox, free. I took 3 of the night phlox, but bought lots of the cutting garden plants. I'm hoping they will bloom right through until frost.

Pondscapes, Rt 28A, Cataumet, 30% off all plant material. They've got some fabulous shrubs and trees (please keep your hands off the liquidamar rotundiloba, I'm planning to get over there later this week to pick them up!). Hydrangea, 2 for the price of 1 - I hope that's correct.

Cataumet Garden Center, also on Rt 28A, buy 4 get 1 free on perennials and ground covers - I didn't check the shrubs there.

I agree that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages of the boonies. We only have 2 interent options, the phone company or Hughesnet (satellite), since although 60% of my town has cable we are in the 40% that doesn't. (Funny that all the selectmen's homes were covered, though.) We currently have Hughesnet, but they limit the amount of data to the point that 10 -15 minutes of video uses up our entire data for the day, and we aren't on the lowest data plan! Good thing we have laptops since we have to go elsewhere to download new software or updates. (They have an option to download between 2-7 AM, but it only works for Windows and we have Macs.) We are planning to try the phone company now that they have concluded their strike since our neighbor has better connection with them, especially at high volume times like 6-8 AM and 3-12 PM.

Cole Gardens in Concord, NH has 30% off trees and perennials, with 50% off rhodies and azaleas. They had a couple of Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes' and one C. kousa 'Satomi' and a variety of nice evergreens and hydrangeas. I also saw signs for 30% off outdoor pottery and I think I saw a buy two perennials and get 2 free. In my experience I have found their plants to be well grown and survive well, even when I buy on sale and the end of the season and they may be a bit pot-bound. Although a few plants had slightly crispy leaves, the stock looked pretty good to me considering the summer we have had. The only other comment is don't go today as there is a Nascar race at the speedway down the road so traffic will be horrible in the morning and late afternoon. You'd be OK mid-day probably or anytime after noon tomorrow.

Some small farm markets are only open for a short period of time. There was one in a little town up the road from where I used to live, but only at the very end of the season did they have much produce. Depends on how many local producers you have to keep the thing going. Many people have suggested I get a half share in a CSA, but even that would be too much for me, I'm afraid. I wish I knew someone to go in with me. I'm not sure there is a CSA near me, but I may be moving so it may be moot. I have scoped out the farm markets around here, and we are blessed in the Lehigh Valley. I live three blocks from a huge, year-round "farm market" but very little of what you get there is locally grown. It is still fun to shop there for some specialty items, and a few local things now and again. But we are still rural enough to have many viable market farms and U-picks, which is where I go for the local stuff. I was so fortunate to grow up in a town with a farm market and apple orchard just ouside of town. My mom went to the farm market once a week in the summer. I credit the place with developing my taste for fresh, real homegrown produce. That and growing up in the land of a thousand home gardens, a place not unlike the mythical Lake Woebegon, where vegetable gardening was a competitive sport.

I'm interpreting this line of email to mean the scratch and dent sale starts on Monday "Super Bargains For those of you who wait for our "scratch and dent" specials, the super bargain sale starts on Monday, September 5th. Here is a list of the specials and their prices. " The 30% off sale "continues" and the email dated Friday says specials "this week" which I assume meant starting Friday. They were set up at the house where she was English and he was from New England. The garden was a series of rooms. The sale plants were in the front yard. The garden descriptions for August are gone off the Open Days website. I think it might have been the one in VT. I think I meant to visit Rocky Dale when we also visited the nursery in northern VT that was semi-retiring. We did an overnight plus some other things and never got to Rocky Dale. Last year we were quite close when we went on the barn tour that included Warren.

Sales are going on at my favorite place
Country Brook Farm in Hudson, NH
Rose bushes are buy 2 get one free! They all look great too!
(I got the Zepherine Druin Roses I have had my eye on!
Bright pink, climbing and almost completely thornless!)

Arborvitaes are on sale different kinds and different sizes

I got 25% off on spring silk flowers, some baskets & wreaths too

Mahoney's is having 33% off most plants...not exactly sure what it covers but I thought it was all perennials and shrubs..

Tower Hill Botanical Garden Plant sale this Saturday Sept 10th with free admission to the gardens. Worth checking out just for the free admission....

Hey TRichard, the store in Pittsfield on Rt28 is Duanes Family Farm. Neat place.

I just heard Lake Street in Salem, NH has 40% off some things but I would check before driving there to be sure.

Just drove by Tewksbury Florist and Garden Center on RT 38/Main Street in Tewksbury. 40% of all trees and shrubs. Don't be put off by the front of this garden center-they have a wonderful selection in the back-although I have not stopped in for 2 weeks, so I cannot attest to what is currently available.
