Hi Don! I think your lists are totally awesome! I agree that they need to be somewhere totally accessible to everyone. I don't know if it would be too much space for Garden web or not. Maybe someone who knows more will pop in. Thanks Don, from all of us!

I don't think the lists actually require a lot of space because they're all just text files. They'd require much less space than photos. Don

Hi Don! If you go to the Hosta Library cover page, there is a lists section. It even says it needs updated. Why don't you email Bob and ask him if He's interested is some or all of them?

How about a list of all the hostas that are the same or very similar plant, but have different names, such as: Clifford's Comet & Revolution, Patriot & Minuteman, Toku Aureonebulosa & Blue Shadows.

I have a tendancy to pick out plants that I like only to find out that it is nearly the same or very similar to one I already have. So I think a list like this would be very helpful.

I think your lists are great and it's obvious you have put a lot of time into them. Putting the lists on your own website or blog would allow you to change the lists anytime you want and not be dependent on someone else to make changes. Have you made a website before? It might be something that you enjoy doing in the dead of winter.

Don, what you listed would make good Chapters in a book. Why dont you publish an unexpensive loose-leaf 3-ring binder style document.
As an alternative, I would be happy to add a topics to Papou's Website to include your lists.

I'd love to see them added to the FAQ but I can see where updating could become tedious. Is there some way GW can put a link to your lists on your website OR grant you editing access on the GW site for the hosta lists only?

I would say Hosta Library since they already have a lists area and have a lot of traffic going through.

Alternatively, most internet service providers allow for a small amount of web space for your own personal web-site. Typical for free space is 10-100 Mb. Also, if you go this route, you could see if HL, Hallsons, etc. would add your link to their sites. This would give you editing rights so that you aren't dependent on anyone else for permission, etc. Oh, also, with ISP web pages, they typically have their own "Build-your-own-site" software. It isn't all that great, but I don't know if you want to invest in Dreamweaver or other web editing software.

You could put them on an Excel worksheet, and post that as a downloadable file on the Hosta Library. Each list would then only take up a single column on a sheet, and you could break it down over several sheets with related lists on each sheet - or alphabetically - and an index on the top sheet. I find Excel is much better at keeping track of stuff than a text file - it's so easy to add a column for comments, for example.

This would also make it easy for everyone to amend their downloaded lists (not the original) with time, according to their own gardening experience and as new varieties see the light.

Hi Don,
The one thing you'll want to make sure of is the format it's in. Some people don't have Excel or Word on there computers so won't be able to open the files. The best thing would be to create a individual page for each list you have.

Don - this is a dream come true. I've tried making lists of my own and gave up. I HAVE ONE MORE LIST FOR YOU, THOUGH: 'Habit'. I continually ask nurseries for 'open or loose' habit, 'tight or closed' habit, etc. I'm sure there are a few others but those two would be enough. The only people who know what I'm referring to are hosta specialty nurseries or mail-order houses, so it would be incredibly helpful to have a list of particular 'habits'. Even those (the mail order hosta people) leave this feature out of most of their descriptions and I think it's a descriptive that's at least as important as size.

I hope you will consider this.

This will be a fabulous tool and save many frustrating hours!

About Papou's comment "Why dont you publish an unexpensive loose-leaf 3-ring binder style document.", I just wanted to mention that one year, when I wanted to make calanders for Christmas presants, I bought a GBC brand "CombBind C50" from one of the office supply stores (Staples, Office Depot, Office Max - one of those). It cuts the holes and puts a plastic ring type binder in (the sort you see in recipe books that various organizations sell for fund raisers). It was a little pricy, maybe $50 - $60 plus supplies, but it's easy to use and makes a nice booklet. I'm glad I bought it and plan to use it for other things besides calanders. If you (or your wife) are into any kinds of crafts it might be something you'd like to look into. Of course, doing it that way, you'd have to make the booklets yourself. Just a thought.

I really like Papou's idea and would certainly buy the booklet from you. Am happy to hear the Hosta Library has accepted your list. As far as new lists, I could really use a list by sizes. I notice you do have a very large H list, but what I need help with is the small/medium Hosta which would include the sizes of Gold Edger, Ginko Craig, Vanilla Cream, Lakeside K, etc. etc. Normally the medium group consists of sizes from small/medium to medium/large, and one has to wade thru so many H to pinpoint the size one is looking for. This is an old thread someone pulled up again - not that there's anything wrong with that.

I have been hosting the Don's lists since roughly early June of this year and will be only too happy to continue to do so as long as Don keeps updating the lists! You can view them on line or you can download each list as a PDF file for easy off-line viewing or printing if you want to make a hard copy.

I love the list!! I am also requesting a list of hostas that look alike but with different names.
