Aborists' Litterboxes and Free Chips for mulch

For now, I'll skip the hyperlink to the thread... but I was reading a post at an arborist forum.

The topic reminded me of the several topics here at Garden Web where people have mentioned using free tree chips from tree services.

Anyhow, the thread on the arborist forum referred to how quite a few tree service workers use the chip box on the truck, as a human size litter box...

It's a fact, too.

So if you are getting chips, and wonder why some are clumped in a soft mass, that's why.

Not all arborists will follow this procedure. But its fairly common.

So if you order free chips, you may want to verify that the chips are "residue-free" - or so they may say. Otherwise, you might wait a year before opening up the pile with a pitch fork.
