Ordering Roses

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good online source for roses. I am specifically looking for New Dawn but could not find it around OKC last two years. Decided this year to change my tactics and just order online.

I've noticed some offer bare root and some actual pots. When would I plant bare root roses? Is there an advantage to either of these methods of planting?

Heirloom Roses (heirloomroses.com)is one popular on-line retailer. They sell own-root roses (grown from cuttings instead of by grafting to a rootstock) guaranteed to be disease-free. The roses are smaller than those you would buy bare-rooted or in a container from a nursery but they grow pretty quickly.

You would plant bare-root roses in Feb.-March. The only advantage of bare-root roses that immediately comes to mind is that bare-root roses are usually dormant when they arrive and you plant them. By contrast, containerized roses are often leafed out and budding or even blooming earlier in the nursery setting than they would be at home, so you run a slight risk of them being damaged by a freeze if you plant them in Feb.-Mar. when freezes are still common.

I just checked, Chamblees has New Dawn. I hang out a little on the Antique Roses forum and have developed a yen for antique roses. I have bought from Chamblees twice and got nice plants both times.

I'm with you, Cori Ann. I love the Delbards and I've been asking Pat at Roses Unlimited for Claude Monet for some time now (no mother plants of other Delbards, sadly). Another place to check for Delbards is Long Ago Roses, since Linda occasionally has some. I sent her cuttings of Edgar Degas, who is truly to die for, so she might have some of him in the future. Back to the OP, Roses Unlimited is the best as far as the combination of variety and quality of gallon plants goes. Their boxes can be a pain, but my trick is to take the rose out of the box, rather than box out of the box. If you slit the tape off those mini boxes in the boxes at the corner, I find you can pull out the pots without ever removing the mini boxes that are stapled in like there's no tomorrow (one more reason they arrive in such good shape). When you buy as many roses from RU as I do, speed is essential. Speaking of which, in case there are other truly insane people like me, Roses Unlimited does bulk orders of roses. If you buy 66 or more roses, you get a price reduction on all the roses (I think 10%) plus dramatically reduced shipping (I think mine drops to $4/rose rather than $7/rose). Maybe you're not insane enough to order that many roses for yourself, but if you can talk your friends and neighbors into a group order it's a great deal. Cynthia

Jen, Grafted, bareroot grade #1 roses, and the equivalent size own root roses can go straight into the ground where you permanently want them. They're mature enough to adjust wonderfully. With gallon size own root, or any equivalent sized lower grade grafted/bare root, it's a judgement call. With excellent care they often take off growing fine. Liner size roses are very young, sometimes barely 4-6 months old. They are called liner size because of the pot size, usually 3-4" across, long (8"), black plastic pots they are grown in. Now liner size (they're always own root), benefit from being upsized to a two gallon size pot, and pot grown for their first year, winterized in a shed, cold garage, etc., where they will get no winter damage, and planted in ground the following year. I have put just purchased liner size roses directly into the ground their first year, but they need babying. Their first winter is particularly hard on them here even if they put on nice size by season's end. Even with heavy winter protection, and a mild winter, they often experience a good bit of winter die back for me. Perma: Yes, an antique rose is much more than just a rose. It's history, it's romance, it's beauty, it's fragrance, it's science, it's life, it's culture, it's poetry, it's magic. It's a reason to get out of bed in the morning--to look around excitedly to see what bloomed. Like you this is basically my only indulgence. I've been frugal by necessity for decades. This is really the only thing I've done for myself and I don't feel guilty for spending the money. What's stopping me now is I have no sunny space left to put them and I am really pushing it on shade tolerance with many of them already. Ingrid: I agree. I think the future will be worse than those forecasts. Jin: Yes, with money just about anything in the garden is possible. I could spend thousands easily in the garden. Every year! I want to fix my paths and get some flowering plants that are shade tolerant. Maybe a bunch of encore azaleas for starters. I'm eventually going to have to shift my focus to shade gardening because for every square foot of sun I have about 200 square feet in shade. I really wish I could get as worked up over shade plants as I am for antique roses. As an aside, my crape myrtles are all blooming now and they are really beautiful but they do not make my heart go pitter patter like my roses do.

Chey, I have tried or have all the roses on your list and they're all worth a try in zone 6. The ones that I've been unsuccessful at overwintering in zone 5, and might be small or slow to recover from winter in zone 6 are: Blossomtime, Chartreuse de Parme (even in my zone 6 spot), Buxom Beauty, La Rose de Molinard, and surprisingly Ilse Krohn Superior. Clarence House hasn't been through a winter yet, but I have high hopes for him. Yolande d'Aragon has now survived in my zone 6 pocket and she's staying because of the potential for those vivid highly scented blooms, but she stands out to me for the astonishing persistence of the "damask crud" on her leaves even though I'm usually oblivious to leaf spots and other irregularities. From mid-summer on, I have to regard her leaves as at least partly brown (not blackspot, but the brown splotchiness that damasks and HPs can get), and we don't have particularly high disease pressure in NE because we're relatively dry. Louise Odier has survived several zone 5 winters but doesn't grow very tall or bloom very often. When she does, the blooms are lovely. Sonnenwelt is still a bit new for me too, but I've already seen some blooms on that one and it looks very promising as a rose in the first year. "Keepers" for me would be enthusiastic thumbs up for Bliss and Jacques Cartier, both of which put out puffy pink blossoms off and on all summer with good health and hardiness. JC being a good bit taller than the compact Bliss. I am one of those that likes Madame Anisette and I agree that she needs a few years to grow into her best characteristics. She blooms reasonably well and often in part sun, which already endears her to me. Kiss Me Kate is also new for me in spring, and I'm expecting her to mature slowly as well. I've heard that her blooms nod a lot, but as a climber that's not always a bad thing. And I had a fleeting moment with Augusta Luise from Vintage some years ago but she wasn't particularly hardy in our winters. I have successfully ordered her along with the other raving AL maniacs this spring, and she gets the most protected of my tea rose spots accordingly. Cynthia

I always forget about all the rose growers (and there are many, both wholesale and retail) in the Tyler, Texas, area and that is terrible, considering I grew up in Texas.

If you ever have a chance to visit Tyler, Texas, in the springtime months of April and May when the roses are in full-bloom, it is an experience you will never forget!

Also, this brings to mind the little bouquets of "Tyler Roses" you could buy for $1.00 each when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s in North Texas. The sellers would set up little roadside stands consisting of a lawn chair, a large sun umbrella, and 5 gallon buckets full of rose bouquets. It was the best deal going for $1.00. By the time I was married and had a child of my own in the 80s, those bouquets were up to $3.00 and still a good deal. Well, that was a fun walk down Memory Lane!

Another favorite of mine is the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, Texas. I've read some negative comments the last few years that their display gardens are not as impressive as they used to be, but they still get good reviews for their products.

Dawn: We went on vacation two summers ago to Tyler, Texas. It was the height of the drought, and blazing hot, but I did go to their exhibition garden for a few minutes. It was too hot to stay very long :), but even then the roses were beautiful.

I made it out to Chamblees too....I wanted to see where my roses came from! I couldn't take any back home with me, we were full to the brim with people and luggage!

The lake we were staying by was so low we could walk a LONG way out. It was so amazing...but it was good. We had a two year old with us, so we had lots of room to let her roam in the water and all of us could ring her in :)

I'm so glad you got to see Tyler, even if it was during a drought. The last time I was there during the growing season (about a dozen years back), everything was blooming and simply spectacular. I've been there since, but usually in the winter.

Hey Thanks everyone for the tips! Both sites do have the rose I am looking for.
Thats so funny about Tyler roses- I grew up in Louisiana close to the Texas border and very much remember the rose guys who would sit and sell Tyler roses under their umbrellas! Thanks for the trip down memory lane too! :) If I am ever back in that neck of the woods I would love to revisit the Tyler rose places and the rose garden in Shreveport.
