Photos of plants from past CT swaps

While I could never remember and post all of them, these two trees are doing great and I wanted to show them off. Both seem to be in continuous supply so keep your eyes peeled at future swaps, maybe you will get lucky. ;)

Some others are thrown into this album as well if you want to look at the whole thing. (link below.) Please pretend my house is freshly painted. Or, recommend your favorite house painter in central CT.

First my styrax, aka snowbell from George, which I probably got three or four years ago. This is it's first time blooming and I think blooming is an understatement! I can't believe the quantity of flowers on it!

And here is a dogwood seedling Richie gave me two or three years back... ready to be moved out of its nursery garden and into a tree-ready location this fall or next spring.

I can't remember who gave me this beautiful viburnum 'Blueberry Muffin' but I was so excited to get it and it's doing so well. I think I remember who but I'm not sure.

Wow! I didn't think styrax grow so fast. It's going to be a very-very large shrub in no time. Enjoy!

As usual, I had a great time. I always look forward to our swaps. I love talking to other "plant" people. Sadly, I was away for awhile buying shrubs for my new front landscaping project and couldn't talk to as many people as I wanted to. Thanks Ron for again making our swap so successful. It has really grown since we've been at Youngs. It's great to have new gardeners. I hope everyone enjoys the plants I brought because I know that I love the plants I get from everyone. My yard is full of them. I'm already thinking about what I can bring to our fall swap. Sue, I'm so glad you joined us; since you were recovering and had to drive a distance to get to Youngs. Yes, Carl! I remember now ... after reading your response. And, yes, I'll not only write it down but also take a picture of it when I go plant today at the beach gardens! The guy who established this garden will take any plants but also loves to know what they'll look like when in flower.

Meant to ask you if you are going to cut the lower branches that branch off the dogwood in order to raise the crown? Looks like you have a good leader going right up the center. I would prune off the 3 lower branches. Just adding my 2 cents! Richie

Richie, I am planning to prune it again. I took quite a bit off the bottom already and I figured I'd let it recover from that and then take off some more. I'm not 100% sure where it is going yet either... it's a work in progress.

My styrax (also from George, maybe 3 years ago?) is blooming for the first time, too... but only ONE branch is blooming. George, any idea why?

Can't get a good picture of Richie's Korean lilac because of all the plants exploding around it, but it is gorgeous and bloomed like crazy this year.

Marty - Oh, I'm so glad that my rhubarb survived! I didn't take any of its sisters because I had my doubts about them being happy living in pots! Have you continued with your leaf castings?

Be prepared to pull quite a bit of its seedlings next spring. But it's a great mini-shrub anyway. I've seen it planted 'en masse'. What a site to behold! I guess you have a space for such thing :-)

Deb -- When you get settled I'll be happy to "refund" some of your rhubarb! And I haven't made any more castings (because I have about 7 already) but plan to keep at least a bit of rhubarb around for just that purpose (still have a petasite here and there, too -- also great for the castings!)

George -- I'm sure the Styrax will be awash in bloom in a few years. I just thought it so curious that this first year (for blooming), all the flowers would be along ONE big branch! I don't think I've ever seen a tree or shrub do that before?! I was so excited when I saw the buds, and I kept looking for some on other branches but never did find any... ;)

Will keep an eye out for baby Hypericums .. wouldn't mind a mass of those beauties. BTW, the Britt-Marie Crawford is doing nicely in the "wet sun" ... at least, I THINK it's doing nicely. The slugs are certainly enjoying it immensely! (How do you keep them off of yours??!)

My styrax bloomed last year for the first time (about three years old, I think) and was just beautiful. This year, so far there are buds on one branch. Now I think it's odd that it would bloom one year and not the next. Oh well, no amount of wondering will make it bloom this year, lol.

I would post pictures if I had my camera. I've been asking my daughter on literally a daily basis to bring it home from her boyfriend's house since the "May blooms" thread on the perennials forum. You'd think she finally bring it home just to shut me up, lol.

George's Styrax Japonica, et al

Well, I got lucky because my styrax from George, Spring swap,2008, bloomed the first year. It is growing in a tree form, not a shrub, and has put on about 15" since planting it the same day as the swap. Just staked it with a bamboo rod and whoosh! It wasn't me for sure; the little guy is just happy with consistent moisture where he is, I guess.

It was my first swap and I'm sorry I do not remember everyones' name, but each plant I came home with, wild ginger, lemon balm, salmon's seal, and a sprig of multi-colored spirea, are all thriving. Seems George's Styrax and and old tom cat had, have something in common, lol. Boy am I thankful for giving gardeners and swaps!

Wow! That styrax is lovely. Does it have a fragrance? I looked it up and it supposedly gets between 15 - 30' tall.
Do you know if any of the styrax have fragrance? I saw there is a pink one.... anyone have this??

It does have a fragrance. Not too strong, which I like.

Now I want strawberry rhubarb pie!
