Hard to say without knowning more details about your forcing procedures but it is rather unlikely that it is something to do with the bulbs themselves, given that all your other bulb types are doing fine and you got them from the same place. Paperwhites are about the easiest of all bulbs to force - they don't require a chill period and will grow roots and the beginning of foliage even in the stores and bulb outlets and will produce flowers promptly if grown only in rocks and water. My immediate thought would be too moist a soil condition. Narcissus need soils that are just barely moist until they start producing top growth. Is that possible?

If I didn't want to store them can I plant them this fall as I would tulip bulbs You could likely do it one of 3 different ways, and have the same, or nearly the same results. Since the roots have been disturbed, I am not sure there is any real benefit to leaving the foliage in place and letting it die back to feed the bulb for next seasons bloom before digging and dividing. I think you 'could' just separate now, and plant now, leaving the foliage on the bulbs to wither away....in case it does indeed feed the bulb in spite of being uprooted. Another way, is to plant the clump, and once the foliage has withered, dig, divide, sort, and then plant right away. Third, you could plant the clump, divide once the foliage has withered, and then store in a cool dry place until fall planting in your area. If it was me, I would likely just divide and plant now, as I find often I don't get things done later when I hope to...life gets in the way, and there is no time. Undoubtedly the bulbs are quite small but with a little luck, you will see at least a few blooms Spring 2009, and several more each following year. For a naturalized setting, I would plant only one per hole because left in place for years, they will multiply. Sue

I bought what sounded exactly like this current Costco gunny sack of Daffodils item 2 years ago. They did well for me here in Huntsville Alabama. I thought it was quite a good bargain. I grew them in a brand new flower bed that I dug out about 8 inches deep, then filled with purchased potting soil mixed with spagnum moss. They bloomed well, and I later pulled them all up and found that most had become 2 or even 3 daffodils. Where their roots had grown down into the clay below the potting soil, they suddenly turned from white to red roots. They are all over my place now. All identical, but beautiful, as of this spring. This summer I just let them stay in place and I have no idea how many I'll have come up next spring. Could be a lot more - could be fewer. We'll see! One thing I noticed about them is that this year when I left them all in place to gather strength all summer for next year, the tops stayed green all summer. A long time to be there right out in public when it would have been nice to see other things than the plain green leaves. So probably would be a good idea to plant these along with something else to grow up and somewhat cover their not all that wonderful leaves. Jim

I like to group the daffodils with the larger foliage (and usually larger flowers) to the back of a garden bed, and then put daffodils with smaller leaves toward the front of the bed. The leaves of some of the larder daffodils can really hang in there for a long time, and if it is toward the back of the bed, it does fade into the whole scene easier. Also, if you plant the bulbs in distinct groups and mark the groups with something that will stay put, then when you plant the zinnias you will be able to see the areas where you can dig. I use surveyor flags, but I don't mind having them around my garden. A less visible alternative I have read about but never used, is cut sections of venetian blinds.
