A rose perhaps? It wouldn't twine of itself, but would be very pretty.

Roses, honeysuckle and clematis are all traditional and have flower power. Akebia is appreciated by those wanting something more refined. All should be chosen for a space of suitable proportions, how big of an area are we talking about?

Wisteria would be fine where the space is large enough, you would need to be pruning that twice per year to establish and maintain the desired branching pattern so size would not be as great as if were let loose on a large old tree.

I'm partial to roses with Clematis as companions, Zepherine Drouhin is my first rose to bloom every year and blooms nearly continually for me. Akebia is a lovely vine and is evergreen at least in zone 8. I got fruit after 4 years or so. I personally hate wisteria because it is so overwhelming and only blooms briefly, or at least the kind I have.

I'd seek out Holboellia. It's marginally hardy for some folks, but seems to really thrive in our region.

It's a plant known for it's tough, evergreen foliage and unusual and scented flowers in the spring. I'd combine this vine with another vine that has some variegation such as Actinidia pilosula or A. kolomikta or the Great Plant Pick Parthenocissus henryana for a dramatic effect during the growing season

I'd consider passionflower (Passiflora caerulea) or star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Both would appreciate such a sunbaked, somewhat protected location, tend to flower profusely in a sunny situation and are evergreen or very nearly so in our climate. The advantage I'd see in suggesting an evergreen vine would be minimal pruning requirements and a more uniform year round appearance for your front entry. And neither are quite as common as a few of the previous suggestions.

I like clematis armandii (evergreen clematis) because it grows like crazy, smells wonderful, blooms early. If you have a warm microclimate for the roots in the winter (like near the dryer vent), mandavilla does well. Although it's blooming now in the nurseries, in life it needs cooler temps to bloom and will go crazy after everything else stops.

Parthenocissus henryana needs a shaded exposure or the silver markings fade out.
