Orange Marmalade and repotting U. Albomarginata, etc!

It turns out I wasn't done for the season. This morning while at the garden greenhouse that offered me the Wheee for $3 or whatever and then when I went back, it was way more. Well I got what is labeled as an Orange Marmalade there today for $10.

I also talked to my hosta guy and he said there should be enough time for a hosta to "settle in" before the winters nap. It doesn't take them 2 months to do so. So I repotted the U. Albomarginata. It needed it BADLY. It wouldn't have survived the winter in it's previous pot. It was a chore. The pot itself weighs about 65lbs! So I put it where it needed to be and filled it with potting soil (not Moisture Control, either) and I got it done. U. Albo is very happy and perky now!

I gave UA's old pot to Luna Moth after I cleaned it out good. She seems happy and the colors really go together.
And I gave Mama Mia's old pot to El Nino because he would look good in it due to his colors. And I put Mama Mia in his pot because the one she was in overwhelmed her.

It was a very busy morning for me, as you can see. But everyone is happy and in the right type of soil now. And I don't need to go work out at the gym for a couple of days, either! LOL!

I wasn't very hooked by Orange Marmalade until I saw one in person. It's an eye-catcher for sure! (And very distinct, so no mislabeling fears with OM :)

I have only had mine this season, but so far it seems to be a very willing grower...lots of second flush growth and late-emerging eyes. It is a joy to see those spring-fresh colors when others are looking world-weary. I think you'll enjoy it?

I have a citrus tree in my garden that is likely over 35 years old. My mother identified it as a poor man's orange, which was the only type of orange available in New Zealand in her childhood. When we moved here seven years ago it was riddled with bugs and dying. We pruned away the branches with the biggest holes in them, got rid of the bugs, fed it etc, and have had some crops of fruit from it over the years. The fruit looks like a grapefruit from the outside but looks and tastes like an orange on the inside. Some years the fruit has been tart and other years ththe fruit has been amazingLy sweet. This year we have new branch shoots that hav THORNS. This tree is old, and in the seven years I have cared for it it has never had thorns. I assume I can prune these branches away and hope it produces more branches without thorns, but I suspect it is reverting to its oldest DNA and that includes thorns. Does anyone know what the chances are that we can get it back to being thornless?

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions. As I mentioned, the kumquat marmalade set up perfectly the first day but I thought it too sweet. The next day, when I tasted it with a fresh palette....I thought it was amazing. Really. kumquat peel is the bomb for good tasting citrus peel. I still wanted to make lower sugar marmalade. So, today I put up a batch of grapefruit and meyer lemon marmalade ala June Taylor. She's the goddess of all jammy things in the Bay Area and is all about "letting the fruit shine through" and lower sugar and of course, no pectin. I used her recipe and instructions from the NY Times. I'm laughing now because after all that peeling and chopping and extracting natural pectin, etc., the recipe used the same amount of sugar and produced exactly the same amount of marmalade as my made up recipe for the kumquat marmalade. It's a little less sweet because of so much lemon and the bitter grapefruit peel. But every spoonful is the same sugar content as my original try. I'm experiencing beginner's luck because it set up well too. So, marmalades are sweet. I get it now. :) Kristine

I'm with lalalandwi, it is easier to say what I don't like than what I do....I like most daylilies. What I don't like is more about garden habits than anything else. -I don't like flowers that melt or fade severely in the sun/heat. -I don't like them if they have to have humidity to produce color. -I don't like them if they are all blotchy like thrips damage, water spots, or uneven overlay (unless it is stippling or broken color evenly distributed & that is part of the cultivars natural coloration and not damage) -I don't like flowers that won't open properly, whether that is canoed sepals, tangled ruffles, mangled edges, 3 days to open so the edges are melted, etc -I don't like flowers that don't produce bloom..a sea of grass with a couple specs of color is not my idea of a good garden plant. Low bud count is OK so long as it is accompanied by tons of scapes. That is sometimes just a fact of this climate. -I don't like flowers on scapes that fall on their faces -I don't like doubles that only partially double or are unevenly doubled, as in one stamen turns into a petaloid but none of the others do leaving a lopsided flower -I don't like flowers that hide in the foliage -I don't like huge flowers on short, bity scapes or tiny flowers on super tall scapes- the scape & flower need to match each other in proportion -I don't like stuff that blooms and then immediately goes dormant, loosing all foliage until late summer, like blooming took every ounce of effort the plant could muster -I don't like yellow, weak, spindly foliage, even if it is intolerance to our alkaline soil. I will tolerate some (read moderate) leaf streak since hail and/or late frost damage is so frequent here and that is a inducer that can't be avoided. -I don't like a plant that rots fans following transplant. They need to tolerate division & replanting like champs. -I don't like plants that aren't hardy in arid, windy, freeze/thaw, z5 conditions Other than that, I like them ALL.

Here are some pics. None of these plants are climbing so they're not fully mature leaves. This is a lousy pic of Burgundy, very dark, arrowhead shaped leaves with lobes. I thought your philo might be this hybrid but I don't see lobes on any of your leaves. Small, immature leaves start out lobeless, But just two nodes up the vine leaves have developed lobes. This is Royal Queen. All parts of this philo are very dark, more mature leaves will be a wider oval with lobes. This philo was sent to aroid expert Dr. Tom Croat at Missouri Botanic Garden by my friend Steve Lucas who is no longer with us. Dr. Croat said it was P. erubescens. The green color is never as dark as it's many hybrids, and it always has lobes. Next pic is of reverse of the same leaf, even old leaves have this pinkish, metallic blush on the reverse. Last two pics are of small, more immature leaf, front and back. So I don't know, your philo might be Royal Queen and being grown indoors in lower light might be making your leaves the green color rather than very dark. Also could be causing lack of lobes, keeping it in more immature stage. Interesting discussion though, I like the challenge of IDs but it can be frustrating with differences in light, culture, which part of the country, etc. We'll keep working on it. Russ

Sure looks like 'Orange Marmalade' to me. It's a lot bigger than mine that I paid 14 or 15 bucks for, so good find.

Thanks. The Hosta guy likes it, too. He said he is still selling hostas right now, too. He'll close shop in another couple of weeks, though, but right now is still OK for planting hostas as they'll take to their spots and pots now fine. It only takes them a couple of weeks.

I didn't see Orange Marmalade last time I was there. They must have just got it in recently? They told me they are trying to sell everything off, too. Before season is over. That is why I got it for $10 instead of $20.

I looked up info (of course) on it and pics. I can't wait until next season! It'll be an awesome addition, I think.

ZKathy, most of my pots are frost and weather resistant so I just leave them where they are. I will get put the others in the storage building I own for the winter, though. (It's not heated but it'll keep them dry at least.)

We love Orange Marmelade. It has become my husband's very own hosta (he loves gardens and gardening and is becoming less of a newbie as he lives wit me longer :-). When the first one wasn't doing all that great, we searched for a couple of years (they were hard to find at one time, being (I believe) a patented hosta) and finally found one which resides in a big blue pot at the bottom of our back steps and which is becoming pretty good sized at this point. You got a good buy on it! Congrats!

Well any worries I may have had that all the new potting soil didn't get soaked enough or all the way through were put to rest this morning!! A heavy rain shower... And it's supposed to rain for at least half to most of the week! Happy hostas and mums this morning!
