I've been in Kingston twice in the last year and drove right by Heronswood but didn't know about it. I would have stopped if I had known about the display gardens. No idea why I did not connect driving by the nursery with Dan Hinkley as I certainly had heard of him. Kicking myself, hard.

Thanks for the pics. Now kicking harder. I had my camera too. We were in a hurry to get to friends house and it was raining but I still would have stopped if I'd connected the dots....

I know there are many out there, including myself, that have great "& so so to Ok> photo's of Heronswood gardens. Could we see some of those beautiful sites from Heronswood photographers? Please? it's like saying goodbye / in memorium/ um...it lets us be visual & gather our memories.

I admidt I don't know how to post a picture. If anyone can give pointers?
My favorites are the Podophyllums & Gunneras.

Hello to all Heronswood fans. If I had known it was going to be my last time at Heronswood at the Fern Seminar with Richie I wood have taken a lot more photos! :(

A bit further down you'll see a thread about the closing of Heronswood. The Nursery is now closed. The website is up for the time being, but I'm not sure they are accepting orders and there's no guarantee it will continue in future.

I'm sure they are still accepting orders as they sent me a gift certificate, which I have no intention of using!!!!

I made an order May 31, just before I found out they were closed. I figured it wouldn't come after reading all the post and the newspaper articles about their closure. But yesterday my order came. I got some plants that I just couldn't find at any other nursery. So maybe the site is still accepting orders.

The site is still accepting orders; if you ordered on May 31, you ordered the day after Mr. Ball dropped in without notice and fired the staff, closed the nursery, started packing plants to move them to Pennsylvania.

I've added very few things in recent years that were not purchased at Heronswood and if two weeks ago you had suggested I would never buy another plant from Heronswood I'd have thought you needed medication.
But that's the reality; I'll substitute or find other sources -- I won't be purchasing from Burpee using the Heronswood name.

Does everybody here know about Plant Scout on the Dave's Garden site? (not sure this post will even go through)

In Plant Scout you can type in a plant name and it will show you vendors from across the nation that have this plant for sale. You can then check them in the Garden Watchdog, another part of Dave's, and see how they are rated by other gardeners. It's pretty cool.

I just spoke with one of the heronistas. Orders placed now will be shipped from Kingston. At the end of this month all remaining stock will be trucked to the Burpee nursery in PA. So consider this your last chance to order some of the Heronswood exclusives and have them arrive in good shape. How Burpees thinks they can successfully raise zone 8-9-10 stock in PA is beyond me. I've had terrible luck with mail order plants (bare root roses from Roses of Yesterday in CA being the notable exception)and only buy locally now.
