I'm Planting The First Tomatoes Today

My favorite day of the year is here....it is time to plant the "early" tomatoes. Yippee!

Yes, I KNOW it is too early to plant them into the ground in the 'normal' manner.

However, I am going to transplant ten tomato plants (Better Bush, Husky Red Cherry and Grape) into their new homes today...probably 6 to 8 of them in containers I can drag into the gargage at night. The other 2 to 4 will go into the ground surrounded by WOWs, if I can find a level spot in my sloping garden.

Last year, the tomatoes grown in containers gave us ripe tomatoes beginning April 25th. I'm hoping to get ripe fruit a week or two earlier than that this year.

The earliest I can plant "unprotected" tomato plants into the ground here is usually around March 20th.

Tomato planting day is one of my favorite days of the year, although.....my actual favorite gardening day is the day I harvest and we eat the first ripe tomato.
