a question about rooting a black current cutting

Hello everyone!

On saturday at the Billarica plant swap I was given a cutting from a black current bush, and was told that if I just left it in water it would root. Looking around online it says I should put it in sand or pearlite or some such rooting medium. So now I'm confused, any ideas on what would be best? It has hardwood for about the bottom 4 inches and then about 2 inches of softwood. Does that make a difference? Should I take most of the leaves off? Leave them on? leave it in the water? put it in sand? ok I admit I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to rooting cuttings, I've only tried rooting things in water and haven't had much luck with that.

Thanks for any advice,

Michael
