What are your Favorite Companion Plants?
Comments (6)I've been playing with this idea in my front entryway bed. Hopefully this link will work. The plants I've been experimenting with are Liatris, Bearded Iris in an assortment of purples, Lamb's Ear, Salvia 'East Friesland', Creeping Phlox, Giant Crocus, Coreopsis, Asters, and Russian Sage. Every year I use annuals to fill in empty spots then try to find corresponding perennials to replace them the next year. This year I'm experiementing with Allysum and an annual Salvia called 'Faery Queen'. What I like about this bed is that all the plants have different bloom times. When my Bearded Iris finish blooming, the Liatris will take over (they are planted around the light's base. The first to awaken in this bed are the giant Crocus. Comments (23)Please id this plant. It is a very soft vine. I got it at a yard sale from the owner who gave me a start. She said it was here when she moved in an had no idea what it was. Here is a link that might be useful: RE: Let's see your favorite Ech. pics....See MoreYour favorite drought tolerant companion plant?s
Comments (17)I'm trying to get perennials going, especially gypsophilia paniculata, but it hasn't bloomed yet, tried some crushed drywall (chalky) to lower the ph a little. Coreopsis went double on me, loved that, but hard to train right, cut it back. I have grown annual salvia 2 years now but want to go perennial where I used that, blue crystal this year and sangria last year, also a freebie yellow coneflower looks nice, meadow sage is good, haven't had time to mulch it yet and can't get that bed watered much. Some Color Parade lilies. Trying to get some delphs and white foxglove going. Crazy daisy should bloom next year. And catmint, not doing much this year but hangin' in there. Annual alyssum is very drought tolerant. White, pink and purple phlox. I stuck in some Rudbeckia Prairie Sun, very striking but not where it is, supposed to self-seed. I want something medium height or tallish with purple bells. What might that be? Failed twice trying to get campanula? ladybells going from seed, will give it one more shot. Russian sage I love but it gets too big, should try to find the smaller variety. Finally, clematis. Have two kinds going well now; one too young yet, one won't bloom, and one isn't happy where I put it. Many of the plants people in warmer zones are using doubt will grow in my zone....See MoreFavorite places to walk, lets see yours
Comments (22)Sam, DEvon, and Peachykeen, Those are heavenly places to walk and such great pictures. I've been unable to get on the gallery for the past month. Devon, I really will have to come back to Palos Verdes someday. I'd like my kids to see it. When I was a kid living in Palos Verdes, we had a favorite place to hike which we called " Tom Sawyer's Canyon". It was very rocky and we named a lot of rocks after stuff in Tom Sawyer. There was a big drainage pipe which we called "Injun Joe's Cave". We'd walk through that, very scared and feeling very brave and daring. ( kind of dumb..I bet there were rats in there but it was so dark). Palos Verdes is full of great places to explore. I keep thinking CA must be too crowded now but when I went back about 14 years ago there were still a lot of wide open spaces. Thanks for the pictures! Linda...See Moredon_in_colorado
