I have two of those trees that I planted last year. One of them bloomed twelve or more flowers at every bud on the tree. I had over 500 pears on one little tree! Anyway I thinned mine to one per cluster. I read that you should not have more than one every six inches on the tree. You need to stake these tree too. They are very limber for the first three or four years. Mine just about bent in half. I had it tied from last year with just twine. It rotted and broke in the wind. Then heavy rain bent the tree over. Thankfully it didn't break. Growing fruit will slow the growth of the tree too.

Rina, The only work I did on this tree was thinning fruits. Too many fruits will snap the branches. I try to graft a new variety anywhere to balance the tree structure. Pear is one of the easiest tree to graft. I choose my varieties from the USDA Corvallis. Scion woods are free and just have to pay for Fedex shipping. They asked you for a reason to obtain the scion woods and I usally told them for a cold hardy trail in Zone 5. In about 5 years then I email them the results. Californian: I doubt that copper sulfate will have much effect on fireblight, especially when applied in the dormant season. Streptomycin should be sprayed on early in spring, using fresh strep powder, about when the blossoms begin to open and again maybe a week to ten days later. Applying streptomycin in winter when the bacteria are inactive would be a waste of material and your time. The tree you have been trying to save is most likely a goner, and I would take it out. With the others, prevention is the answer, since there is no real cure once fireblight gets going in the growing season. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA
