Rocky soil

I've been lucky that I've mostly been gardening in pre-existing garden beds, that had nice soil. I've added compost every year, so they remain very workable. BUT we did an addition 2 years ago, and the beds near the new part of the house have horrible soil. Exceptionally rocky (and sandy, which I never saw before). Each time I plant I try to remove as many rocks (ranging from major league rocks to small pebbles) as I can, and add in 1/2 compost. But it is discouraging. I find digging to be incredibly unpleasant as the shovel inevitably hits a rock. Have you dealt with this? Did you bring in major equipment to remove the old soil and just add in compost? Or did you just yearly try to improve pockets of it? I'd love any war stories or ideas or encouragement!

Thanks!
