Ancient thread, I know. But as I'm still searching for suppliers of this columbine, I have a few things to note: 1) I shipped 3 mature members to my mom in Wisconsin (I live in Missouri) without any problem at all. They all survived and have put in at least two full seasons with her now. 2) I found one site that says that "Carol Ann" and "Granny's Bonnet" are the same variety. I found a couple of sites that say that "Granny's Bonnet" and "Dorothy Rose" are the same variety. 3) The botanical name of all three is reported to be "Aquilegia vulgaris". But that includes many, many cultivars and flowers of many colors. Makes me wish I could find a reference to the different cultivars. I'd really like to be sure I'm truly getting seeds for "Carol Ann" since that's what I already have in the ground here (though a couple were crowded out last year and I fear may not come back this year). It looks like Swiftgreenhouses.com is selling them this year to their customers / distributors. (And I did recover one of the "tag-stakes" that came with my original set of columbines, and the address on them led me to that website.) But of course, I'm not a business, so I can't buy direct from them. They've got a "broker list" there, but those too appear to be wholesalers.

I have columbine seeds-they are a cross between "Nora Barlow" and "Grandmothers Garden" an old fashioned short spurred type(drk purple). If you'd like to try there I will trade for your "Red Hot Poker" -B

Your picture above looks like the hinkleyana columbine in form and maybe because of soil conditions or something like that, they got paler this year--but also it could be a mix of the two different plants. Columbines are notorious for cross-pollinating. I think the only way to keep them coming up the same colors year after year is to keep different varieties far away from each other! I have both, too. I asked about these at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower sale last year, and was told that the yellow hinckleyana is the native Texan flower, and the red and white canadensis is native to other parts of the south, and mostly northern u.s. I've tried other columbines but they don't do very well... it seems like these are the only two I can hope for in my garden, but then maybe they will come up with new shades of color all on their own. Germination was more successful than seedlings!! I did get enough and I prob planted too many. If they have roots and leaves, definitely put them carefully into good seed raising mix,water well and don't let them dry out. Some seed could still germinate so I just leave. Our weather has been funny. We get blasts of heat as a trough goes over WA so that it goes up at least 10-15 degrees overnight, more in summer and then drops. No wonder my seeds often fail.
