IF you get one of those roots, and IF you plant it right away, you might get a plant. The roots I see at those Big Box stores are usually about 1/2 dead. They get them in in Feb and let them wither. Seeds from A. canadensis are usually available from people with a trade list on these boards. Doing a search for them will also yield a bunch of results. Once you have some, they are usually self sowing if the conditions are right. (Well draining soil, sort of humus-y, some shade appreciated.) Sometimes seeds sown in early spring bloom late summer, most times not until early the following year. And yes, a good healthy root transplant almost always blooms the year you plant it. I bet a decent nursery in your area has some already in a pot so that you don't have to depend on bare roots of questionable quality from a mass merchandiser. If you do decide to go the Lowes/HD route, make sure the roots you get are pliable and have some foliage emerging from the top. Here in Z6 (PA), the first leaves are already emerging on my outside plants. Indoor roots should have a whole green crown to show.

Hi Rross They are usually very hardy. I don't think I have ever fertilized mine. Given your fertilizing it could be that you may get flowers the first year. I thought that the first year was only leaf. They are a useful addition to the garden because you can spread the seed around. I would be interested to know if you do get any flowers this year. The seed can also be variable in colour. I started out with blues and then had mauve, pink and eventually white. I should also mention that mine came up in some of my containers, eg 16inch diameter pots which had roses in them. Good luck.

I do pull oxalis as soon as I see it, and I was diligent on it last year, so it's so strange that there is so much of it, especially to find that it is MOST pervasive where I sprinkled my aquilegia seeds. And it looks like none of my Touchwood seeds sprouted, so that really sucks - money lost. Plus lost postage money on many of the seeds I traded for. I did find some sprouts I hadn't seen before in one bed yesterday after I went over the whole yard with a fine toothed comb, looking for any Aquilegia sprouts. I do have Canadensis plants from sowing seeds last summer that I got from a relative, and a plant division of Green Apples is blooming now, so I do have some. It's just sad to have lost so many seeds plus the money, and to have gotten hurt while gardening - my foot still hurts!
