Thanks to everyone for your responses. I spoke with a master gardener at the Ventura County Extension Office and it is Xylosma Congestum. As Joe said, I did not mean to imply it was native, my apologies. One of the major nurseries here in Austin is starting to push it as an alternative to Waxleaf Ligustrum and Red Tip Photinia. Both of which have been grossly over planted all over Texas. I thought I recognized it from the picture but wanted to be sure. I am thinking about trying it and wanted to research it more once I confirmed that it is xylosma. Mike - Thanks for the compliment of my daughter. Unfortunately it was a whirlwind tour and I really don't remember a lot of the landscaping except for the picture above and the roses. This particular hybrid is one I found by the trailside out in the local mountains. Same cross as starlight but this one is somewhat different, tall, lanky and much more open than starlight but with similar leaf texture, not flowering so profusely as starlight. I do have a few S. starlight pups, one probably hybridized with S. 'pozo blue' and another likely with S. clevelandi 'Winifred Gilman'.

It doesn't matter that it was uprooted. Removing plants from a national forest without a permit is very illegal. If you wanted to save it legally, you should have either gotten a permit or placed it back in an appropriate location where you found it. Considering that you don't even know what the appropriate potting medium is for that Dudleya, it's best chance of survival was probably to just be left alone next to a rock where you found it. Plant poaching is a serious problem and should not be tolerated.
