Barrier hedge for deer?
Comments (22)My first thought was a firing squad after they finish with the groundhogs. It's advisable to put some reflective tape or something on the thin wires anyone might string up between posts or trees. A human could easily not see it if they don't know it's there (or forget it's there if they do know) and get injured if running into thin wire especially if it were at throat height. The 2 fences 4 feet apart is often suggested by extension agencies and seems like a better solution. You could plant things you have found "your deer" don't bother as much keeping in mind it not grow too high to shade you veggie garden. Found this interesting site 'Athens Select' for heat & humidity tolerant plants tested by Alan Armitage. Suppose you know about them since they're marketed in the gulf states. Good luck with your hunt for a solution. Here is a link that might be useful: Athens Select -Tested Heat/Humidity Tolerant Plants...See MoreWhat is fairly pretty, deer proof and takes shade ?
Comments (11)Oh, boy! When I worked at a garden center, questions about deer were so frequent. It seems that deer will eat almost anything when hungry, and if I were you, I'd go with something cheap... just in case. So I guess not Monkshood (too tall for you). Maybe you'd just want lots of mulch because, truly, our biggest "repeat" customers were those people buying replacement plants. And the more you plant, the more the deer will come. Afterall, why eat bark off of trees when people are setting out tasty "buffets" along migratory routes? I once lived near woods and would have them come into my yard. They would graze on absolutely everything. One or two would even SIT DOWN! for a rest on my flowers between courses. I'd have to go outside and chase them off my lawn. So good luck. Comments (2)I'm not sure which hedges would be unpalatable to deer, but I know that they hate the smell of mothballs. I run a wholesale nursery, and we had a big problem with deer eating the plants until somebody told me about mothballs. Maybe this info will help you. I'm not really sure how you'd put out mothballs at a residence....See Moredeer prooof hedge
Comments (2)A herd of tame deer pretty much lives full-time on our property and they love rugosa roses here. They are browsers and try most things at least once, even eucalyptus, but they've never touched rosemary or lavender. I have many phormiums and a few palms outside of the fenced garden and they don't touch those either. The phormiums could make a nice hedge - there are different sizes available. I only watered mine the first summer, so they might work in your situation, especially if you mulched. The deer will eat phormium flowers, at least here. It's true, what works for one person doesn't always work for another. I had a list of deer resistant plants from a nursery on Vancouver Island and it suggested that deer never touch peonies. Ha! Not "my" deer, they love them....See MoreSteve Massachusetts
