deer prooof hedge

Deer proof hedge.... does such a thing exist? How about a low hedge of rosemary and lavender?

The soil is sandy and dry and it does not have to grow very tall. Any suggestions would be welcome, as the deer have demolished an entire row of rugosa roses!

Wow, they've never gone after my rugosas, but I have other roses with less thorns that they probably prefer.

They've never bothered my lavender. It is said that they don't like plants with a strong scent, but what they eat in one persons yard might not be bothered in another's. It seems that both you mentioned would be good in your situation.

A herd of tame deer pretty much lives full-time on our property and they love rugosa roses here. They are browsers and try most things at least once, even eucalyptus, but they've never touched rosemary or lavender. I have many phormiums and a few palms outside of the fenced garden and they don't touch those either. The phormiums could make a nice hedge - there are different sizes available. I only watered mine the first summer, so they might work in your situation, especially if you mulched. The deer will eat phormium flowers, at least here. It's true, what works for one person doesn't always work for another. I had a list of deer resistant plants from a nursery on Vancouver Island and it suggested that deer never touch peonies. Ha! Not "my" deer, they love them.

I think so- critturs, if not feeling threatened, tend to take the path of least resistance. It also depends on how hungry (i.e., how many of them are competing for resources in a given area) they are. Bear are more persistent than deer in terms of getting through barriers and breaking things down. Deer get habituated pretty quickly, and will bed down and even have their fawns in a quiet corner of a municipal lawn. Bear follow their noses, grab what they can, and move on. But sows train their cubs to return to good pickings. They'll ruin trees to get to fruit. They all seem to like consistency and to shy away from new stimuli, but they do figure things out. My first thought was a firing squad after they finish with the groundhogs. It's advisable to put some reflective tape or something on the thin wires anyone might string up between posts or trees. A human could easily not see it if they don't know it's there (or forget it's there if they do know) and get injured if running into thin wire especially if it were at throat height. The 2 fences 4 feet apart is often suggested by extension agencies and seems like a better solution. You could plant things you have found "your deer" don't bother as much keeping in mind it not grow too high to shade you veggie garden. Found this interesting site 'Athens Select' for heat & humidity tolerant plants tested by Alan Armitage. Suppose you know about them since they're marketed in the gulf states. I'm not sure which hedges would be unpalatable to deer, but I know that they hate the smell of mothballs. I run a wholesale nursery, and we had a big problem with deer eating the plants until somebody told me about mothballs. Maybe this info will help you. I'm not really sure how you'd put out mothballs at a residence.

Jenniferemily I like your last thought the best. This would, I think, fit the aesthetics of upstate N.Y. the best also, no? As to salt tolerance, it's all a matter of degree. No conifer really likes it, and if that region has anything like the madmen/women who dictate salt usage here in Wisconsin, it's going to be a rough go. +oM
