Bumping up for the new "shipping season". VERY helpful tutorial and pics. I'd also like to add a frugal "flat rate" shipping option - a capri sun box (cut one of the ends down slightly) inside of a padded flat rate envelope is a great shipping method. The envelopes can be ordered for free on usps.com, and you can print postage with tracking much cheaper on their website. It's definitely not as cheap as the under 13oz method, but if your package is heavier this would work well! I ship a lot of "stuff" on ebay so I know a lot of tricks of the "shipping" trade.

First - do not cut off any leaves. When the light hits them they will green up. Second - see the link for packing and shipping instructions. Third - be aware that many hostas from big box stores are mismarked and many are infected with Hosta Virus X (HVX). Plant them well away from any hostas you might already have. Fourth - if they can't be planted immediately because of frost concerns, I would pot them and leave them in a protected area or worst case - put them outside on days that are nice and back in the garage or house overnight. Mail ordering is a wonderful way to get plants when you are ordering from a reputable supplier (Hallson's, Naylor Creek, In The Country, etc). They ship excellet quality plants that are properly packed. If you are trading or shipping to friends, use the instructions in the link and they should be just fine. There are bugs and slugs and there are chickens and fish and lobster and crabs...as well as bacteria, house flies and mosquitoes, cereal moths and cockroaches.. Perhaps it's the size that somehow makes you feel that salting them is cruel? More cruel than putting out ant traps? or spraying for cockroaches, eating chicken or beef? I have almost 100 different hosta varieties and many many more plants...I am not willing to share my hosta with slugs nor my corn with borers. As for slug bait, there are different kinds the iron sulfate isn't harmful to other animals. Don't know if the slug experiences more pain than salting causes....I don't follow them to see if they eat the bait and where they go. Linda C
