question about preparing for trading
Comments (2)Hi Mary, I just dig, soak, wash soil off, maybe soak some more, and then package in the evening, so I can arrange for pick up the next day. I have thought that a few things would do well, to pot up ahead of time, and cut back, and let them recover b4 trading...tall lanky artemesia, and tall bee balm comes to mind. I don't think most folks looks for their trade to bloom this season anyway too much, just as it would be if one purchased a plant. You might check out the link below to the FAQ...though the postage costs are much outdated. If you haven't already, you might check out this too...Preparing Plants for Shipping Also...some things just don't handle being dug, packed and shipped as well as others...but that is to be expected, and hopefully the member on the receiving end can give it TLC and keep it alive to thrive for them. Comments (6)they will all wilt from the digging.. and they surely will not look pretty ... if it were me.. and i didnt care what they looked like.. because the peeps understand.. i would get some plastic grocery bags .. and newsprint ... masking tape and a sharpie ... dig the plant.. take a division or two.. wrap it like a burrito in the paper.. wet the paper.. by filling.. then immediately dumping excess .... and wrap it into the plastic bag.. and write the name on some masking tape and secure it around around the bag ... and take your dozen or two plant burritos to the exchange ... a real gardener will not care how it looks.. they just want a viable.. moist root system ... and my best suggestion.. if you want pretty plants to trade.. think about this in june next year.. and pot them up.. have fun.. nothing like free plants.. and making a few new garden friends.. ken ps: same method when i send plants to friends in the mail ... see random link Here is a link that might be useful: third pic w/o the pot .... plus the plastic bag to avoid making a mess in the car ......See MoreHow to harvest babies and prepare for shipping?
Comments (7)One thing that I do find true about salvias is that when you dig them up to ship them out, certain species of salvia need to be potted and pampered through the transplant shock of having their roots ripped out of the ground, and once stabilized, then they can be shipped with some dirt around their roots , a wet paper towel and plastic holding the dirt balled around the roots. I just received a dead salvia stick from a trader and she had just dug up her plant and mailed it to me. Maybe you can do this with other plants, but not salvia. They will die in the box. I think that salvia rootings need to be ROOTED and mailed with dirt around their roots....See MoreUPDATE: 100 Limit Plant Swap
Comments (150)Me too Tammy, I can't wait! Ok folks I just wanted to post an update for some of you to calm some fears about postage. I KNOW it is something to worry about sometimes when you are unsure so I just mailed off a package and I wanted to give you an idea of how much you can send for 10-12 lbs. My box size was: Lenght: 19.5 in Height: 10 in Width: 9.5 according to my post office and I told the SO their scale was off some it weighed: 9 lbs 14 ozs (USPS) according to UPS it weighed 10 lbs 15 oz so billable weight was 11 lbs weighed: 11 lbs (UPS) Contents: 50 Wild Daffodil Bulbs assort sizes from LARGE to small 5 Thalia dealbata ave size 4 inch long roots 6 Canna avg. size roots were 4 inches long 2 Smaller Canna tubers 4 Med clumps of Litrope 6 Yellow Flag Isis 10 Ditch Daylilies NONE of my foliage was cut back, these were plants not starts. I think this is a pretty good amount and my box was STUFFED PLUS, I had everything wrapped in newspaper and then inside zip lock bags inside grocery bags, and so was wet because it is waterplants so I wanted them to stay moister then the land plants. ANYWAY, I hope this gives you and idea how how much you can send of course with USPS it depends on where you live for the size box you send to where it is going. This was sent from NC to MD, but I am sure with UPS the rates are pretty much the same no matter where you ship to and from. I checked the rates that time and they were pretty reasonable I thought. OK, I got a message from SHANTA in CANADA she wishes to join us and she sent me her list, BUT I emailed her back asking her is she is SURE SURE she wants to join and when I her from her again that she is sure sure I will post her list for her because as most of you know if she does join us she can not post for herself because she is in Canada. :) Fran...See Morechrizty
