Not a dry year. Plus I have somewhat heavy soil and the garden is mulched. Some of them did it last year. I don't know if they died completely, or came back. This year the first one that started exhibiting this was a couple months back. The whole plant ends up crisped up and the stalks can be just lifted up, they come away at the soil level. Another thimbleweed just inches away from an affected on can look fine.
Does this plant tend to go dormant early? It does prefer full sun, doesn't it?
I have a few thimbleweeds and they behave differently depending where they are located. The ones that are on the dryer side of my house have been brown and done for the season for two weeks or so. The others that are in an area that gets more moisture are still green but are on the down hill slide for the season. Even with the ones that have more moisture, some are fairly crispy while others are not so bad off - not sure if this info helps or not.... Shari
Looks like your plants are going dormant to me. I agree thimbleweed can be a bit fussy at times. They are a very cool native though, very much worth growing.
If they were going dormant, wouldn't they all be doing it at about the same time? We're talking about plants within a few feet of each other exhibiting these signs months apart.
I really can't answer that for sure. The conditons could be too damp for them. They could be genetically programed differently and/or some are just stressed more than others for what ever reason. I noticed some my hostas are going dormant super early this year but obviously not months apart. If you have time, you could Email the pic to your local county extension agent or public gardens etc, maybe they can ID the problem from the photo. I would be interested in what they tell you.
