Need help with new garden paths

I'm planning to add a potager, a real fenced-in kitchen garden, to my back yard. But I need advice: we are only in this place on weekends (some 4- or 5-day ones in summer, though).

The entire 32x19 area will be de-sodded and composted manure will be rototilled in. Then I need to establish the paths which will be wide enough for a wheelbarrow.

I've read different solutions for weed control in paths, such as landscaping cloth, then bricks, or mulch, or gravel. I want to use coarse bark pieces as mulch, and to keep the weeds from growing, I want to use cardboard (old box pieces) or newspapers (8 layers of newsprint) before I put the bark mulch down.

Since we're only there on weekends, I worry that without constant watering and re-moistening, the cardboard or newspaper will dry up and start lifting or blowing around, and in general, look terrible.

What is your experience using cardboard or paper for weed control? Do you have to keep re-wetting it?
