Lilac Bark Problem

Need help. Whitish/gray mildew patches beginning at the base of my lilac covering the branches and bark but not on the leaves. When the mildew is wiped away there appears under the mildew a yellowish substance and the residue from wiping is white and granular/particulate. Leaves have started to fall. Would love to know what I am fighting and how to treat it.

You should post this to another forum, perhaps a general gardening forum, a flowering shrubs, forum, something like that. This is a native plants forum, and lilac is not a native plant. I myself haven't seen this problem on lilacs -mildew on the leaves at this time of the year is common and apparently not very harmful.

The 'fungus' is actually lichen. Completely harmless and completely unrelated to the die-back. There are many things that can cause a lilac to die-back. In your case, large mature stems of common lilac are particularly susceptible to lilac borer. Stressed trees are also more susceptible to the borer...how much salt does your DOT put on that road behind the lilac?

Lilacs need 6 hours of sun to bloom well. They also like neutral soil. I will often put a handful of lime in the backfill when I plant them Mostly our soil in NE is acid. Mine is 5.0. The other thing to look for is borers. They will bore into the oldest branches of a lilac and damage it. Look for holes and/or frass in the largest branches. You can always rejuvenate an older plant by cutting out one third of the oldest branches about one foot from the ground. If you continue to do this for 3 years you can completely renew the plant. Be forewarned that this will make it smaller than before. But it will grow back to full mature size. Steve

Good idea about Super Thrive, it's great for reviving distressed plants. I water my snail, lilac and trumpet vines every other day. This time of year it's good to be consistent on watering. If you are allowing your vines to dry out too much, then watering, it seems to weaken the plant.

I have a lilac bush that was on the property when I bought it 16 years ago. It was tall and gangly then, and was tall and gangly till we cut it down about 3 weeks ago or so. I read that you can cut them down to 8-12 inches after they are done flowering and basically start from scratch. That was my plan. the trunks are as big as tree trunks (lack of care and knowledge) but all of the trunks look rotted on the inside of them. There are shoots coming up, and I'm not sure if they are new lilac shoots, or poison ivy, or probably both? This is before the "trim." After the trim. Is it all rotten? Should I just cut those out? New growth? Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, there are some new shoots. Can I dig those up and replant elsewhere? I think they are attached to the trunk, not sure. Thanks for any advice.
