Joyce (jel48)... You ok down there? How's the flooding??

I was in Owatonna on Saturday morning for my friend's party. I stopped by Turtle Creek, but didn't even get out of the car when I saw that the parking lot wasn't paved. I was not about to have muddy shoes.

Wow, who knew that there would be so much flooding from this storm! We've had 2.75" since Saturday morning and we just got another Thunderstorm warning. I know you guys have had a lot more. My friend said her sump pump has been running NON STOP! And there are a lot of basement carpets that are out on people's front lawns.

I sure hope you're not suffering the same fate.

We were begging for rain up here, and now, it just won't stop. I just don't know when or how I'm gonna get these 40+ new hosta in the ground!

Hi Melissa! By Saturday evening, we only had about 2 1/2 inches, but by Sunday morning, the rain gauge had overflowed! And I'm pretty sure that if I'd been able to have dumped it when it got full, it would have filled up again. Then another 3/4 inch on Sunday.... Our next door neighbor has rolls of carpet out on the driveway, and several people I work with in Rochester had flooded basements. We got lucky... kinda... well, actually we just got it out of the way 3-4 years earlier. Our entire basement flooded that year, on Memorial day, and we ripped out shrubs, tiled the west side, and put in new gutters and a new heavy duty sump pump. So, this time we did have a little water come in the bathroom window, but it barely got the edge of the hallway carpet at the bathroom door wet. The Red Cross was going door to door to assess damages yesterday. It's been quite an experience. And I know what you mean about hostas to go in the ground. Actually, I've just made the deal to buy a house in Rochester, and I've got pots of hostas that I've been putting off planting because I knew I'd be having a new place to plant them.

So you're moving then, or is this an investment property?

I'd love to see your place before you go, but I just don't know when that might happen. My next trip to Owatonna is the weekend of baby Hannah's first Birthday, but I'll have a car full of people who will not appreciate your gardens as much as I would!

HI Vanessa, Is the gunk only on the tubers that have been floating in water? I've never had gunk. My lotus are still buried in the ground. I'm thinking in the next couple of weeks I'll dig them up. I hope I don't start seeing aerials growing out of the ground before then! I'm not quite as intimidated by them now, now that I've had the experience of dumping them out and cutting out tubers. The one I thinned last spring I think I'll leave alone. The other one will be in its 3rd year, but only put out 1-2 blossoms last summer and put out nothing its first year. I can't decide if I should thin that one or leave it alone?? Vanessa, sometimes well water can make slime. I don't think I'd worry about it. Who knows.....maybe its good for the tuber!

I had the water mitigation guys out to my house three times in the first year after I moved in, so I'm pretty familiar with the drill. If your builder hasn't called them already, call them first thing in the morning and get them out there that same day. If the builder wasn't planning on doing it, do it yourself and present him with the bill afterwards. They have moisture sensors which they'll use to test the drywall (walls and ceilings). Moisture over a certain level means they'll rip it out so the framing behind can dry out. Within a certain range, they'll just put some fans on it. They may also put fans on the wet framing after ripping out the drywall. In some areas they may just pull the baseboards but leave the drywall alone, depending on how high the water has soaked in. They might also treat some of the wet framing to prevent mold. The carpet you can lift yourself now. Begin where it's wet, and pull back until you reach a dry spot. Pull up the wet pad as well. Drape the carpet and pad over things like chairs and such to allow air to circulate on both sides. You can actually save the carpet if only a bit is wet and you act immediately to air it out and get fans blowing on the pad and carpet. The water mitigation crews I worked with really knew their business and were very professional. Once you put yourself in the hands of a competent crew you'll feel much better. But it's more important to get them in and doing their thing now, than worrying about who's going to pay for what. Worry about money and repairs later, do the damage control now.

I think may_flowers is correct. The bottom piece of the crown should be the same depth as the cabinet doors. At least that's how it was done on my cabinets. Here's a couple pictures to show it: That section were it is a little off will always e noticeable to you but I would bet money that no one else will notice it. People wont really be looking up at just that spot. The panel on my dishwasher is just a smidgen off level and in 4 years no one else has seen it. I still see it but it just wasn't bad enough for a redo. Sorry you've had to go through so much trouble with your kitchen restoration/remodel.

Generally with flooding of the type you experienced there is more than just H2O in the water. Many times there is sewage mixed in. It really doesn't mater if the motors and wire appear to be dry now. They were never intended/designed to be under water. As mentioned above corrosion will, and already has, started happening. It might be a year or so before the appliance come to full failure though. You could get lucky and nothing will happen. If the insurance company is refusing replacement of the appliances ask them for a Whole House Warranty for 5 years that covers all the appliances against failure.

Well, in Northern Illinois (Chicagoland) we are drowning. Happy Hostas - but very miserable people. Crystal Lake had 12 inches over the weekend - the Fox River near us is waaaay over it's banks. The carpet dealers are having a heyday. Ground is saturated and apparently we will break all the records if we get only another two inches this month. And it's coming tomorrow.

I saw SE Minn is a mess with homes falling into the river and loss of life. And Northern Minnesota is in a drought.

Melissa, yes, I'm moving. I hope to close on September 5th. It's getting close but hopefully will happen. It will probably take me a couple weeks (or more) to get moved, so if you are going to be down this way just let me know! I'd love to have you visit!

Westy, it is definitely a mess here. Everything in this part of the state is starting to get slimy! Yuck
