I hope this year is a very heathy and prosperous year for everyone!

We had snow storms today so hubs was out there shovelling again. Hubs took us out to a chinese restaurant tonight for New Year's Eve, it was sooooo quiet in there, I thought it would be packed! But Lots of dances going on in town and with the weather the way it was I suppose that kept people away too.

Christmas morning was quiet with just the two of us, but son and family came over in the afternoon for dinner. Then boxing day we went to his future in laws to meet them,,,,yikes! There are a lot of them. *L*

I got a lot of chocolates, body lotion, shower gel, Bailey's irish cream, coconut liquer too.. *L*

Mom gave us money and I won fifty bucks in a Christmas photo contest which was nice! so I'm going to take that money and put it towards one of those Food Saver thingies that Oprha had on her Favorite Christmas show last year! Do any of u have one of them? I thought they'd be great for keeping freezer burn away from the veggies. I love to freeze veggies, cause to me u can never have too many veggies.. *S*

Marcia, that downspout trellis sounds like a great idea! you'll have to let me know how it works out for you. The plant markers sound interesting too. What size of markers does it make?

Sheryl, we got a new tree from Wallyworld this year and the stupid strand of lights on the bottom of the tree have burnt out. Son is going to come over and take a look at it and if it is the wiring and not the light bulb it is going back to the store and next year I'm going to put up the old tree! I miss the bushy branches that can hold heavy ornaments! I thought these new fangle hinged trees with lights built in would be easier, but not if the strand of lights breaks. I've had trouble with lights bought at walmart before, half of the strand works the other half didn't.

I think I'm going to cut back on decorations again next year, I'm not doing so great health wise and putting up all these things are very tiring for me. With it being only the two of us, I think it is time to cut back. But of course I say that every year, the same with the garden and I always do too much. *L* I leave the decorations up until Jan. 6th or 7th here and then slowly start taking them down. I'm still playing Christmas music as we both enjoy it.

Claubill, I took a pyschology course thru Laurentian last year. It sounds like u do a good thing decorating the school doors,, I bet it cheers up everyone when they walk by them. *S*

Have u thought about doing the Dr. Phil diet? I watch him, but haven't bought the book yet and I need to lose a lot of weight too but haven't tried yet. He is suppose to have written a book with menus right in it to give people a head start on losing weight.

Hi Everyone!

Hope u all had a good holiday. Ours was quiet, just the two of us but we had a nice Chinese dinner. *S* Sort of a family tradition.

We have almost 2 ft of snow outside now. Son went out onto the patio to take the timer off the Christmas lights today and he could of used snowshoes. *LOL* I got him to look for the suet feeder that was hanging out there on the tree, but looks like it got knocked off the tree and is now under snow, so I will have to get another one until April when the snow melts.

I also found out why the bottom strand of lights on the new tree weren't working. Wilbur chewed thru the wires! Son is coming back today with his sodering gun to fix it. Good thing we bought him it for Christmas eh? LOL

I will be taking cuttings from the fushia soon, as soon as the decorations are all put away and seeing if i can start new plants from those. I haven't brought up any amaryllis yet, am going to have to keep them in the cellar longer.

Stopped taking my arthritis meds before Christmas because of the heart attack risk and am now walking around using a cane some days. Haven't been able to track down the doctor to give me another presciption either. I didn't know a person could ache in so many places. *LOL* I thought some of these places fell off over the years. LOL

Hi Debbie N, seems quieter than usual around here. About Dr Phil, I am also thinking of going on that plan. I do not have the book either but i got the Rapid Start menus from his website. Also, hubby just bought a cheapo elleptical thingy yesterday and its looks OK and not too big! We are putting it in a spot where we will not be able to ignore it...

As a new years resolution, I promise to be better to my houseplants and water them more than once a month! I used to be so good, then Real life interferes and plants get pushed down the priority list...

Hi Everyone It has been beautiful here the past few days! Got up to 18C! I can't believe it! I have been out puttering around in the garden every day cleaning up. I even have flowers blooming... in April!! I have some scillias, and snowdrops. The pansies are out, so are the tulips and oriental poppies, but no flowers on those. I will have to try and get out and put some shredded newspaper over top of the beds as it is just too early for these plants to be popping up! I sure hope my hostas don't pop up or they will get frosted. Almost all our snow is gone now. I was out on the patio today trying to get the Christmas lights down, but son put they up on the clothes line and I'm too short to get them off (he is a foot taller than me) and the line won't move, so he will have to come over and help me figure that out. *L* I had 50lbs of alfalfa cubes delivered last week to put around my hostas as they love that. I had the guy first put the bag in the garage, but then I was pruning one of the roses in front garden and up popped this chipmunk. Scared the heck outta me and he was surprised too as he squeaked at me. I think it was a chippie and not a mouse, so I had hubs move the alfalfa in the porch and I put it in a rubbermaid tote, as I didn't want the critter getting into the bag and thinking he had died and gone to heaven. *LOL* My clubhouse bed and hosta bed, which are raised beds 36" tall have shrunk down almost a foot. Soooo I will have to take the hostas outta there and fill the beds up with dirt again and replant the hostas. I won't be able to see the hostas much if I don't do this. I'm hoping this will be the last year I will have to do this, as I have already done it twice and I hate the thoughts of having to move these big hostas they are so heavy and it always sets them back. I will have to buy some more dirt, peat moss and manure to fill up these beds, one more time. *ugh* Marcia, I can't believe u have mosquitoes already! I know there are bugs outside but have no idea what they are, they are too small for me to see. LOL I just hope they aren't mosquitoes. I was going to buy styrofoam cups to put plants in but haven't yet. It is too bad u couldn't buy some styrofoam contaniers that the chinese restaurants put won ton soup in for take out. Hi Janet, I was thinking of getting our ponds going before son moves down south but it seems so early to me, I can't get use to the idea. *L* What is a stick type filter? Hi Sandralou *waving* Where are u posting from? What kind of gardening do u like to do? I was able to find a cat harness at Walmart. I took Wilbur outside and he ran under the patio and got himself off the harness, the first and last time I tried it. *L* I will have to try again but just keep him in the front yard. Tina, I still have green irises from last year! They never went dormant, don't know how they did it, very strange spring. How hardy is rosemary normally? Danni, I am glad that your bleeding heart survived, that is great! clairdo are your tulips blooming or just up like mine are? Everything is so early this year it is strange. Here are some pics of my spring flowers, not many blooming but at least I have some. :-) I think these are scillias. And here are some of my amaryllis which are now taking over the house. Hi It was another cool day here today but at least it was sunny and I wasn't wearing my winter coat like I was yesterday. Last night it went down to 6c and tonight it is only 7C. I was able to get out and get the new side garden covered in newspapers and landscaping fabric and anchored down. I will start planting it in the next few days depending on the weather. I cut down some of the roses as the leaves are such a mess, they are just awful and I don't know what is causing this. I don't know if it's white fly, black spot, the freezing temps we had after the leaves came out. Some of the roses don't have the papery leaves but most of them do. The new leaves on the roses seem to be ok, but when the first leaves came out on the roses they were ok too then went weird fast! This is what JP Connell looks like now Yuk! I put some white fly traps out around them tonight and I also sprayed them for disease and bugs so hopefully they will start looking better, of course they couldn't look much worse right now. It is the JP Connell, Winnipeg parks and Morden Blush that are the worse right now. I have a flower bud on my water lily so it will be so nice when it blooms. I only have the one now as I donated the other to the plant sale for the Horticultural Society. More of my lilies are also starting to bloom so that is nice. I don't have as many lilies as I did last year. I don't know if the chipmunk has found a new food sourse, or the winter was hard on them, or they still have not recovered from the contractor smashing and burying them. I love these Orange Pixies, they sure do make ya take notice. *S* Some of the lilies I thought I had sprayed with Round up last year are coming up in the new beds, even in the beds that are 20" tall. But they are only a couple of inches tall now by the time they get to the surface. LOL I have also been pulling out baby roses that I also sprayed with round up last year. I guess they are growing up from the roots. Here is a new pic of the beds that were built last year. The hostas still don't hide the wooden beds, but I figure in another year of two they will. Hi there Linda! So nice to hear from u again! Sounds like u are keeping yourself very busy! I have some evening primroses blooming in a pot! They overwintered there with a tulip. *L*I use to have a lot of them in the old rose bed, but since I redid it I pulled a lot of them up. None of my daylilies have started blooming yet, I keep waiting. I hope I will get more blooms from them this year. Marca, I'm sorry to hear your Dad is errr unable to do home repairs. Maybe your mom could help ya....*LOL* A dead snake under your front step? Maybe he was under it when the step cracked? It wasn't a poisonous one was it? Don't know if u have those up there. A wooden deck? LOL Well it would be nice if he did it this year. Seems like it would be a good size deck too. Some of my flowers didn't bloom long either. Like the regular lilacs and peonies. The lilacs hardly had any flowers on them and what they did have were little spindly things. Hi Dannie, 5 bucks is a very good price for a clematis. Hmm maybe I should go and check out our Canadian Tire. I have been wanting to go there and get some more patio chairs to spread around the yard so I'd have more places I can rest so that gives me more incentive to get over there. *S* I have a Nelly Moser that blooms in the backyard, but I never go back there, so I'm thinking I should dig it up and move it to the front yard where I can appreciate it more. That back wall is going to look so pretty with all those clematis growing up it. You will have to take a pic when they are blooming! Some people say that stomping on hostas is good for them. That they develop more eyes so they send out more shoots, the shoots will be smaller though. I haven't tried it yet for my hostas that are slow growers, but the way Tegan is getting around the yard now she might step on some. She almost got one tonight. *LOL* I have heard about cables being put on trees to hold the branches together, I bet u feel better knowing that it can't fall on your house now. How old is the sheltie? I bought one for my mom when I was about 17 and he was the smartest dog I ever owned, I should say mom owned, but he was still my dog. It was the only way I could get a dog,,was buy it for her as a gift, as she never returns presents. LOL What is a pleco? Hi Janet, thanks, my gardens only look good cause I don't take pics of the weeds. LOL I still have to get to the weeding this year. I did the front yard, but the back yard needs help,,,,,,big help.... LOL Thanks for reminding me, I haven't put out the epson salts yet. Yikes! Sorry to hear about your ant troubles, is your hubs killing the hills at night time? He has to kill them at night time as during the day the ants are out gathering food. I have a recipe that worked on my ant problems, but it takes a couple of weeks. it is one part borax laundry powder soap 3 parts white sugar mix it up well and put a few spoonfuls in a covered container with a couple of holes in it, so that no kids or other animals or birds can get at it as it is poisonous. Place the container where u know the ants are and it will kill them as they take the poison back to the queen ant and feed it to the others too. Well time to get to bed here. Hey, Debbie! Haven't been here for awhile, but i checked in this evening and there you are. Yes, it sounds as if your house needs a rehaul! LOL Have you gotten everything fixed yet? I bet your son could get up on the roof and find that leak! What about your fish? Maybe if the two of you went out and tried at the same time, one of you could scare him into the other's net. All the bulbs were planted in plenty of time. I don't mind weeding around them - to me, it's worth it when you see those gorgeous blooms nice and early in spring! Ack - how can i think of spring when we had a snowfall today? :( It'll melt, i know - the temperatures are supposed to be warmer next week, but still... Actually, i have pretty much everything done. Last weekend, i organized all my containers and put them away under the deck, and even got going on the last length of foundation bed at the back. Dh had put gravel all along the back, thinking that the weeds wouldn't grow through, but they did of course. Over the past few years, i've been slowly shoveling out all the gravel and replacing it with flower beds, and now that's almost done. I might get my son to haul a few loads of dirt to it this weekend so that it will be ready to plant in the spring. There are about three containers left to dump. I still have petunias blooming inside my mini-greenhouse! I don't know what i'm going to do with them because i'll have to take the plastic cover off before it gets too cold. Maybe i'll just take more cuttings and see if i can keep them going inside. Other than that, i'm starting a bit of seed trading. I don't have a real lot of saved seeds this year, but Patrick Studio had a clearance sale, so more are on their way. Where oh where am i going to find room for these things?? What a dilemma! :D No Christmas here yet. I never think about Christmas until after my daughter's birthday, which is next week. Guess that's soon enough, eh? I've actually gotten a few stocking stuffers already (so i lied about not thinking about Christmas! LOL). I'll be making a few gifts this year, but i'm not pushing it - i know me better! Oh, i just read about the mold in your rec room. You have to watch placing things too close to outside walls. We have a few spots in our basement too. Hard to get rid of the stains, but i think washing the area with lemon juice will help. Are your walls drywall or panelling? I just read something about painting a wall with some kind of vapour barrier paint. That sounded interesting. You should check into it. Not much else going on, so i'm off to check some other forums. Hi everyone! We are under a winter storm watch here. Suppose to get 20cm of snow and at 7pm Saturday night we were at -25c with a windchill of -40; now we are at -32C with a windchill of -47C!! Youch!We are also under a extreme cold advisory! Da do u think? LOL Got a email from my niece last night and she had to take my sister to the hospital. She had a heart attack. Pat had a stroke a few years ago too and has been living with my niece for the past few years. Apparently she had been getting chest pains, but didn't tell Jenny about it until it got very bad. She is in ICU but they won't do tests until Monday to find out how much and where the damage is. So prayers would be appreciated. I had to call mom and carefully tell her about Pat being in hospital, but I think she took it pretty good. Mom has high blood pressure and heart condition, it runs in the family so I was a bit worried. Pat's blood pressure was up over 200 and is still high, but it has come down a bit, hopefully the docs will adjust her meds to bring it down. Pat is doing better and wasn't on oxygen Saturday. her spirits are good! I have been busy baking baking baking. Made over 30 more butter tarts the other day,,,,tonight I made about 7 dozen of mocha chocolate cookies with walnuts in them....sooooooo good. I'm going to wrap some of them up and put them under the tree for son and g/f,,,,just another gift for them to open up. Son is suppose to come over tomorrow to help hubs shovel out the driveway, I asked him yesterday before we got the storm, so I timed that well. *LOL* He is also going to filet a nice big Lake Trout for dinner. He did one a week ago and it was sooooooo good. I can hardly wait! I have 5 more of them in the freezer too. *L* I don't think he will be able to shovel the driveway if it stays this cold,,,,too darn dangerous, but I'm hoping it will warm up! Marcia, yep just a few decorations LOL Here is another one of our livingroom. Here are a couple of Kris Kringles that son and hubs have bought me over the years And stockings we bought when son was about 3 years old. Marcia, have u gotten the floors done? I know that would make u feel so much better if they were done. It was too bad hubs didn't take a pic of that deer,,,wow that sounds so kewl! Do u get deer damage in your garden? That pic u showed of that rose,,,is realllyyy tempting me,,,but I don't have a place for it,,,well not really. And mine seem to get so big! But it sure is tempting, I even told hubs about it, your pic tempted me so much. You can be a very baaaddd person ya know? *LOL* Hi there Tina..... *waving* Glad to see u again! Also glad to hear your basement is finished, u must be so happy! sounds like u will have a great time Christmas too with a little one around! So much excitement for her! I have John Cabot survive for me here. I mistakely gave it to my neighbour and didn't keep a piece of it for myself this summer when I was moving roses around. I thought I had an extra plant for myself, but it wasn't the right one. *sigh* It is a nice red rose and it survived ok for me here so should do ok for you. Hi Gale, good to see u again! Hi Deb,
I noted your comment about arthritis. I started taking Glucosamine Sulfate and Cod Liver Oil, both food supplements,in November, out of pure desperation. The arthritis was making me wild with pain every winter and seriously affecting my garden time in the summer. While not completely pain free, I am better this winter then I have been for several years. I bought both from Wallmart, very inexpensive. It might be worth a try for you.

Hi Debbie. You said you took a psychology course through Laurentian. Did you take it by correspondence and if yes you would have taken it through Dr. E. Levin. Yes, I do love to decorate the office doors at Christmas time. That's about 20 doors.

On January 3rd, I quit smoking and started the Atkins diet. So far, I've been successful at both. I've lost about 5 to 6 pounds. And I'm also going to the gym 2 or 3 times a week and make it a point to do 3 miles on the treadmill. I have to get in shape for gardening. I have quite a few pounds to lose but I think that this time I can do. I will need all that extra energy if I'm going to have a beautiful garden.

Well, I have to get ready for bed since I have a busy day tomorrow at work. Can you imagine working for 21 psychologists? They're enough to drive you crazy.

Hi all, and Happy New Year! Santa bought me three tiers of plant lights from Lee Valley for Christmas, thinking I would like that in the basement. But my basement is too yucky for something so nice, so now they are in the dining room filled with all of the things I had rescued and put downstairs last October. Doesn't do much for the decor, but makes me happy!

I too take arthritis meds -Mobicox, not yet recalled *sigh* My DH takes glucosamine with chondroitin, in liquid form, but his hip is so bad that it seems only a replacement will give him relief. He's probably about 5000th on the waiting list..

I have been working for the last 6 months on starting up a Horticultural Society in a nearby town. Our first meeting is next Monday, and we are really excited about it. A lot of work though. I have a little garden club here in the village but it is kind of dormant this year, as we lost our free place to meet. I am trying to resurrect it now, but it is hard to do all the work myself. But I will give it one more shot I guess.

My whole family has been down with a terrible virus this week - on Monday night DH, DS, and DGS were all vomiting at once! I called my daughter, who is a volunteer firefighter and a 911 response officer for the police. She took one look at her Dad and brother and called an ambulance. The paramedics made all four of us go to the hospital by ambulance - it was a little crowded in the back *LOL* But Grandson thought it was pretty neat - his whole family in there! Daughter followed in her truck, and drove GS and I home after a few hours, then went back later for Dad and Brother. We are still recovering, and boy are we tired!!

Looking forward to Spring already - it was 10 C here today, just like summer was coming, and 18C in the greenhouse. I will be moving some chairs in there tomorrow so we can sit in there and enjoy sonme sun for the rest of the winter. We usually start that in February.

All in all, our winter hasn't been that bad, although the alternate freezing rain and thawing is probably not good for the garlic I planted in November. Can't do anything about it anyway, so I'll just wait and see.

I'm not posting because i'm crabby. It's been freakin' COLD all month and this morning there are -50 windchills. I need a cave or something! >:( Grrrrrrrrrr!

I can sympathize with the meds. Celebrex hasn't been recalled, has it? I only take one a day, so i think it's okay. The doctor told my mother-in-law to take Tylenol Arthritis when she needs it, so maybe that's what you can do, Debbie.

K - i need to get back to work.

Jak - i'm not talking to you because you have spring. Pout. (kidding, you know that!)

Hi Everyone!

It has been cold the past two days here
-37C with the windchill. The days before that snow, snow and more snow. We have about 3 ft now. Not much gardening going on around here. Even the leaves on my fushia plant have started to die back, can't figure out what is going on. I don't think it has bugs.

Hi Freezengirl... Welcome! Thanks for your comments about the pills. I have been taking Cod Liver Pills for over 20 years now, but I don't know the other pill. Is Glucosamine Sulfate
a calcium pill? I have to be careful as I'm on so many other meds.

I am back on my old arthritis meds, I went to see the doc last week. He has cut me back though, I'm only taking 1/3 what I was taking before and that is cut in half twice a day. I was on new meds for one day but there were a bit too many side effects so he put me back on naproxen.

Hi claubill, yes I had elizabeth levin. That is great u have lost so much weight already! Good for you! And NO I can't imagine working for that many psychologists. *L*

Hi Jak, sounds like u were a very good girl! *BS* I love my plant stand, that is where I start all my plants. Works great! I have mine in my family room your right, too nice for the basement. *S*
Sorry to hear about hubs hips, I have two bad ones myself, though they are feeling much better since I started back on my meds.

I'm sorry to hear u lost your free space for your garden club, that is too bad. Have u asked at any churches or your town hall? We use to meet at our town hall, but now the society have moved into a church's basement. Good luck getting the Hort. Society going! There is a lot of paper work involved with one. I use to be the Corresponding Secretary for ours and it kept me busy!

It sounds like your family was really sick! Are u sure it wasn't food poisioning? I'm glad you are starting to feel better now, but it sure sounds like u went thru a terrible time.

Sounds like u are having nice temps.. 10C? I wish you'd share some of that with us.

Marcia..... -50C???? YIKES! It's no wonder u are crabby! That is very cold for you! You don't want to go into a cave though, as they are cold and damp, u need to go to a nice warm place. Hey isn't Gale going somewhere warm? Get her to pack u in her suitcase and smuggle u along. *G*

My doc told me if I didn't want to take the naproxen or other stuff to take Tylenol. I didn't know it was an anti inflammatory.

I'd better go I'm going to try and bake some rhubarb/strawberry pie and I have never baked it before, so it's going to take me a while. I'm just stewing the rhubarb now and I need to go and make the pastry and get it ready for tomorrow when I bake them.

Yep.........it's FREEZING out there and LOTS of snow!
Good thing we got the snow with these temps.

I wish it was Feb. now, so I could be in Florida and miss this...lol
I'm so jealous Julie gets to experience SPRING temps and sit in the GH. My GH has 3ft. of snow surrounding it!

I've potted up 37 brug cuttings and have them under my lights now.
Also started a few seeds and storing them in the coldroom for the WS effect.

Been looking at the seed catalogues that are coming now, and am trying not to go ahead and order anything! Not sure if I'll get around that!

Finally got DSL in my area, so hooked up yesterday and what a difference!Now, we just have to attempt to hook up a wireless router so Mitch can share it with his computer downstairs. That should be interesting getting that working.

The kids screwed up my 'puter again last week...ended up buying a second hard drive that just slips in and out of the modem, so their stuff is on one and my bookwork on the other. That way I know I can always use mine 'cause it won't get buggered like they manage to do it.

Now I've been busy getting all my programs back working...and of course, lost all my e-mails and addys again......grrrr.

Anyhoo.....life here is just putting up with loads of teenagers hanging here all the time, hibernating and looking forward to Florida next month! Still have lots to organize for that as well and make notes for my Mom who will be staying here with the animals..(the dogs take glucosamine and vitamin E daily for their joints too)

Hi Gale! Glad u got snow cover this year, that will mean your well will have water in the spring too right?

I heard something about those wireless things can get hacked by people driving down the road and hacking into them, hope Mitch puts up a good firewall. I would love to have wireless so I could take the laptop into the garden and chat. Now that would be heaven to me *LOL*

Gale it is going to be so nice for u to be down in Florida when it is so cold up here. Does hubs know about the surprise yet?

I have taken some more fushia cuttings and spraying them twice a day and have them under a hot cap thingy under the plant stand. I hope they will root for me. I hope u can control the spider mites on your brug cuttings.
