In 2003 I put in a number of Nandina Domestica Compacta from Monrovia Nursery via Armstrong Nursery. These were also called Heavenly Bamboo Dwarf. These were planted on the East side of a North-South wall that starts out at 10" tall and gradually goes up to 3.5' tall. Each Nandina alternates with 35 year-old Bottlebrush plants. So the plants get a wide variety of sun from the South one in total full sun to the North one that gets no direct sun at all being shaded by the tall wall, the last two huge bottlebrush, the house, and an olive tree. They are all doing well on all sides and are all about the same size, which is about 3' tall and 2' wide. They are just now about to get trimmed for the first time ever. I was expecting different growth in the very different sun environment and have been very pleasantly surprised. What a wonderful plant.

Oh, shade, now we're talking my experience. Crops grow slower, yields are smaller, less weeding & watering with mulch, and great spots for cool season veggies rather than corn, peppers, beans. We build the soil well with lots of organic matter including regular additions of used coffee grounds for mulch (though not near the lettuce greens or you'll be washing grounds out of the lettuce all the time. That corner would look lovely done up potager style with edging and ornamentally arranged vegetables & flowers. swiss chard, bright lights chives, garlic or regular pansies & calendula for color & salad additions greens, spinach & lettuce Corrine

I have always been a brunette, then this past summer I went a little blonder, then a little more blonder, etc. When I was leaving for my appt. yesterday DH asked if I would ever have my real color back because he missed it. I don't know if that was sweet or not, but I went a little darker. Next appt. I will go a little more darker and have some highlights put in. Raeanne, I would love to see your painting. I have such an appreciation for people that can paint anything after visiting the Museum of Fine Arts. The best I can do is paint a wall! Liriope looks ideal; right height, ok in the shade. However, not sure how "evergreen" it is; I'll continue to study but it looks like it dies back in winter in cold climates? Then in the sunny part of the planter could put annuals... Gardengal48...it's funny - my wife sees how city workers rotate flowers from their greenhouse and she says, "oh we should do that in the beds in front!". The beds in front are fairly huge and she has no idea of the work or cost to rotate annuals twice a year or more, so I agree with you on annuals! I'm looking up all the other great suggestions now!
