Hosta Seedlings: 3 Tier Green house

Hi .. I have a question to ask about my hosta seedlings .. I have got a flat that holds 48 plants so far I have got 34 up. I have the flat in a 3 tier mini Green house in my home with a fluorescent 75watt hanging over them that is 400 lumans .. The plants are 4 inches from the light Is this close enough or should they be closer to the light? They are all doing great so far and leafing out nicely so far. Is a 75watt ok for a 3 tier green house? I'm new to seedlings and I appreciate all your help. I simply really love these plants and want to grow my own .. But I want them to grow right.

Pic of seed growing setup....

...as seedlings are uncovered and grow taller the light can be raised with chains.....close is good. I think flourescent are 40w each so 80w over the 5 containers.

Ok - your projects are very cute! WOW!!! I have a 3 tier shelf that I curbside shopped and it's proven the test of time. It's has been outside in various seasons and it as durable as ever... time for me to do something nice for it... LOL And I too love your bottle... could that be the next step in totem, cake stand or bottle light creations.... hmmmm????

Jeanne, what a WUNNERFUL collection of pictures and plants! It truly is exciting to have something growing in one's yard that is utterly unique, be it a sport or a seedling. The fun with seedlings is not just the seedlings themselves, but also the planning and anticipation of things to come.... I'm eager to try a couple of crosses this year, but realize only too well that you need seed before you can get seedlings and seedlings need time to mature and show their true colours and form. Hope springs eternal and oh, the anticipation....

All these cultivars are H. 'Grand Slam' OP seedlings, except for H. 'Mill's Stilbon', a H. 'Eos' seedling (in Greek mythology, Stilbon is one of Eos' children). I'm planning to put a couple in TC. Problem is to select which ones. The ones pictured are all extremely good garden plants: above average growth rate, good substance, can take a fair amount of sun. IMHO opinion, #1 (Hosta 'Mill's Trump Suit')is by far the best. It's quite difficult to catch its beauty in a picture. An attempt to describe it: a very tight clump, vase shaped, 16-17" high, with dark red petioles that show very well. The 9" long leaves are very bright medium green, very shuni on top and below. No chance you'll confuse it with another existing cultivar. For the other ones, I'm hoping to get some feedback from you all. I you could pick just 1, which one would it be ? If you want to see larger images, check out the link added. To make matters worse, these are just the first ones we've potted up. We've already disposed of about 20 mature seedlings, but there still some 40 more to judge. Some will be used in the Hosta Mill breeding program, a few will be registered, the rest will spend their live in the Hosta Mill, only to be distributed as OS or given away as friendship plant. Mark , I meant to try to answer you sooner, but lost track of your post. 1) I saw the SL16 label on a box the last time I went to Home Depot. I had the box opened and saw they had the correct SL15 ballasts in them. I believe that they may be changing the style of the fixture and just used the old number and upped it by one, not realizing that somebody initially based the product number on the ballast number. Beats me. I always open one box to see if its got the SL15. Sunpark doesnÂt make an SL16. 2) The traditional T12 fluorescents were designed to use 430mA each, and use a magnetic ballast. The newer T8Âs have been designed for 265mA of current. The SL15 ballast is able to drive the old F40T12Âs, but it causes the circuitry to operate different, drawing less current than the older design normally would use. I use F40T12Âs in them, both out-of-the-box and overdriven. An overdriven fixture really lights up the older style 430mA tubes. (Extra design info: T12HO=800mA , T12VHO=1200mA, 34wT12=460mA, 20wT12=380mA, 20w/40w slimline=425mA, and thereÂs more, each different T5 wattage has a different current design.) 3) Probably not. It is nearly always cheaper to buy a good, inexpensive shoplight and remove the ballast Especially that Home Depot one. 3b) I donÂt know. I had downloaded brochures on them from GE months ago. They may be designed differently, as they are supposed to have special features, such as automatic line voltage matching. 4) I donÂt know the fixture you speak of, but reflecting back light that otherwise would escape is always a good thing. 5) Power Factor (not ballast factor) is a ratio of the how efficiently the current and voltage waveforms match due to the circuit design. Without trying to remember how to explain it, I can tell you this Â donÂt worry. Poor Power Factor normally does not cost you. It costs the electric company, unless they have special meters on your house to detect it. That is rare. 7) DonÂt try to switch in and out of overdrive. Too late for details, but youÂre asking for trouble if you do it If you are using a single SL15 to light each bulb, then put any switches on the line-side/power-side of the ballasts (black wire). Outdoor greenhouse? So what do you plan to do about winter dormancy if you are starting them now? Gotta big fridge?

That was my question, Babka. Why are you growing these now? In Zone 5 you will be very fortunate indeed if these babies get big enough to survive winter. Most people sow seeds in Winter for placing into the garden in late May/early June. Then they are big enough to get through the Winter.

I have also done some Winter Sowing. It's hit or miss, so I only use left over seed. But I get small seedlings in summer, and I have over wintered a few successfully. It's tricky though.

what a brilliant system ... i especially like the clear cups held in the cell packs ... you can see how vigorous the roots are ...

i dont know what to tell you about the timing.. i will have to ponder that part ...

i used to keep the lights at about 2 inches from the plants ...

but what i can tell.. is how many bulbs per level???? if one or two ... how do the ones toward the edges.. get sufficient light levels??? ... especially the lower you go ... unless you are moving them all the time ...

i used to have 2 two light fixtures per level ... to spread the light intensity ...

regardless.. you will be able to tell.. becasue the plants will start leaning toward the light.. so shuffle them around .. eh ...

have you looked into the seedling links at the library ... never know where you will find a kernel of knowledge??? .. maybe even write to bob.. and give him a link to this post.. and ask him about your timing issue .... dont be shy.. worse he can do.. is ignore you.. and i highly doubt that he would ...

i dont think chris does seeds... so i dont know if he could help ...

i will continue to ponder the issue ... where are you.. more specifically ... and do you have a garage where you could carry them all ... to force the requisite dormancy??? .. lets say.. for the 50 odd days.. and then bring them back in.. and activate them again ...

babs.. we in z5 have a giant refrigerator.. it called a midwest winter.. lol ... but you gave me the idea ... so i am working off it ....

stop all fert pretty soon .. we want them to slow down.. and harden off ... and then figure out.. what the hell to do with them ...lol
