More questions do you have answers?!

three pretty flowers that I need to ID before I decide to remove them. Are they native wildflowers or non natives that I would want to remove? Also a question about lily of the valley: I thought that they were not native here but one website I came across called them native. I'm wondering if they are calling them native when they mean naturalized, meaning that they are widespread? Here are the photos that I need IDS for. ONCE AGAIN thank you to everyone!

not sure, but compare the first two to:

#1 butter and eggs (Linaria vulgaris)
linaria ct botanical

#2 queen annes lace (Daucus carota)
daucus - ct botanical

both are abundant, and non-native to the U.S.

not sure about the 3rd one

I used to have a lot more duplicates, but downsizing and Old Man Winter have eliminated most of them. On BOGOs from Maryott, I used to plant one in the ground and one in a pot for hybridizing. I still have Inimitable and Levi Davis both in the ground and in a pot. Until this spring, I had two clumps of Ruby Lipstick and Annabelle's Blush, but sold the extras to make room for new daylilies. I like to divide my lates and spread them around. I currently have three clumps of Royal Jester and two clumps of Techny Peach Lace, although I'm pretty sure I'm getting rid of both clumps of Techny Peach Lace. Since it bouquet blooms, the show is over in three weeks, and I have much better performing lates now in the same color range (Kentucky Lucky, for example bloomed last year for almost 8 weeks). At one time I had three clumps of Westbourne Good Old Days. I kept dividing it because it was such a vigorous grower. Now I have two clumps, and plan to sell off the smaller one in the future. If I were going to mass plant any of the daylilies I currently own, it would be Edge of Your Seat (because of the terrific repeat bloom) or Ruby Lipstick, which is well budded and usually throws a few reblooms scapes. I don't think that Yellow is an Iris ensata colour. There have been cross breds between the two species, but ones I have seen are usually cream rather than yellow, and i very much doubt that they would spread like pseudacoris. I think you have a pseudacoris there. Also bear in mind that it is not just the vegetative spread that is a worry environmentally. Seeds are likely to be more of a problem. I don't know if birds carry them, but clumps growing by rivers could easily shed seed into the river to be carried far and wide, to create new rogue plantings. Removing seeds is a good idea, but there will always be the possibility of missed pods, or that year when the weather was too bad to go out, or you were sick, or you sold the house and the new owners let them go to seed. If you are in an area where a plant is considered a noxious weed, then the best decision is to get rid of it. It's very altruistic to think you can control it, but it doesn't always work.

Hi Everyone and thank you so much!! When I get back from an errand I'll address your individual responses! I love the ideas you've shared (e.g. simple shaker - and to make the trim width match those of the uppers')! For now though, I feel the need to clarify: I realize that because I bombarded you w/ so many questions, it appears I'm freaking out or too indecisive...but if I'd asked only one question, then waited a while then asked another and so on, you'd probably think I was fine - haha! ;) Meanwhile - with the exception of the cabinetry issues - there is NO real rush on most of this. Yes we don't have a counter/sink but he was going to re-use the old, non-original doors until yesterday when I decided I'm willing to pay more to have them be flush-mounted like the upper ones. He'll figure out the final dimensions e.g. degree of angle of bump-out on Tuesday, and everything else necessary is already waiting to go besides the counter which can be ordered on Tuesday - and will take a week. So anyway, I'm actually not anxiety-ridden, just excited. And I ask you people not because I can't figure it out (I have ideas and lots of magazines) but because I've found more GREAT and unexpected advice on this forum than anywhere else. Everyone here is very experienced (at least in their research after having seen so much!), and focused here, and sometimes it's more fun and easier to give others advice, you know? I know I love to! I disagree that the options are all over the place by the way. I don't think one decision leads to another and can throw things off because most of the kitchen's original already and I'm making this a relatively period kitchen and there are only so many choices, most of which won't clash with others. E.g. a schoolhouse or other period light will go w/ wood floors of any color, will go with cafe curtains or pull-down shades, will go w/ the original cabinets. I just want to know if you have specific favorites or a quick "vision pop" like "flush light in center and pendant at window" or "...with bright-colored shades" or "angle the bump-out instead of square" or "don't put a microwave there." If I just *HAVE* to narrow down my questions ;) the most necessary ones are w/ regard to the lower cabinets (how not to compete w/ the uppers and still have something appropriate) and then the general idea of what the bump-out should look like (angled or straight edges, with or without those decorative side pillars)...maybe whether I should add feet? I feel like the cut-off upper cabinet above the stove will just work itself out by default but advice would still be nice. The rest are all just fun details that can be added at the end and are simply fun to get advice on. Wow - I sure know how to rant & ramble! Off I go...will get back to you soon, thanks again!

Thank you for the information about the lily of the valley. I thought that it was non native. A friend gave me a few for my garden but I'm going to pass on planting them. I'm going to try to find the native plants that are similar. I saw them somewhere. Now I have to tell my friend that I'm not going to put them in. I'm sure she'll understand. Maybe if I find the native ones I'll buy a few for her, too.

there's acutually an american Convallaria ?? -
Convallaria majuscula (I never knew this!!)
not native to NY state (usda map)

the plant I always knew as lilly of the valley (non native) is Convallaria majalis.
considered a woodland plant and can be used for naturalizing- but (as mentioned above) - introduced.

there are native "false lily of the valley"
Maianthemum stellatum
Maianthemum dilatatum (west coast?)

maybe your friend has one of the natives??

A bit off-topic, but -- the plant from your first picture was my favorite flower when I was growing up in Europe! We kids called them "little dogs" because when you squeeze the little flower on the sides, it opens up its mouth :) Do kids here in the US do this? Now thanks to you and bubbleoffplumb I know the plant's English and Latin names, which is awesome. I've never seen this flower here, so your picture made me smile :) It's an odd feeling when being a responsible gardener means pulling up the plants that you loved when you were a kid! I must say, learning that Lily of the Valley is a terrible pest here was my biggest gardening heartbreak! :)

Alenka, if it's any consolation to you, I hear that there are some cherished North American plants that are pests in Europe. Invasive plants arrive in many ways but one of those ways is when someone plants a pretty plant that turns out to be invasive. Cest la vie.

Hi Alenka, I have read that Snapdragons are favorites of children for the very reason you said - they squeeze them to make the little mouths open. They are annuals that are popular here but not native either, alas!

It's amazing, isn't it, what you can learn on these forums. I love 'em.

I think the third picture looks like some species of Epilobium - most are called 'willow herb' although the most well known - Epilobium angustifolium - is called 'Fireweed.'

thank you ladyslppr, I googled it and there are so many varieties of Epilobium. I haven't seen one that looks exactly like mine but I think your ID is right. And it is a native, right? I have more pictures of other plants but I'm almost getting embarrassed to have so little knowledge of what's growing in my yard. i'll post it separately and hopefully will get an ID.
