Some Natives in my back yard

There are a lot of Christmas Ferns - heres 1 patch

Also a lot of Yellow Trillium (Trillium luteum)

These are all native plants, I didn't plant them

On the far left of the second picture, you can also see a small Rattlesnake fern (just a single frond) and an Ebony Spleenwort fern.

And in the bottom of the last picture, you can see a baby trillium - still in the single leaf phase.

Are the trilliums fragrant? That is one of my favorite things about Trillium luteum, but I found some groups in the Smokies this year that were not fragrant (which was a surprise to me).

Nice plants and you are lucky to have them.

Rattlesnake fern was new to me. I've seen them, They're all over down in the woods at the bottom of the yard but for some reason it never connected that they were ferns, guess because they didn't fit my conception of what a fern should look like. I knew the Ebony Spleenwort was a fern but didn't know the name.

Many years ago one of my best friends went to Vanderbilt and did his PHD thesis in Botany on the Christmas Fern. That year each hike, camping trip and fishing trip we went on he pointed it out every time we passed one. He called it "His fern". That's the only reason I knew its name.

Thanks for the information on the Rattlesnake and Ebony spleenwort. Now I can label them in my front yard shade garden.

Edie...Funny story...last summer, Sean had some buddies over for a swim. His friends know where Sean's plant collection is--grouped together near the house by the pool. One of the guys decided to be a smart a--, and grabbed one of the smaller cacti in a pot and yelled to another guy in the pool, "let's play keep away from Sean...". Now mind you, these were all baseball players with pretty good arms... One of the other 'new' guys said "hey..throw it here" (he was in the pool-not knowing what kind of plant it was). Sean just stood there shaking his head and told them I don't think you want to do that...the kid threw the plant to the other kid, and he caught it mid-air about 30 feet away---along with a handful of thorns!!! OUCH!!!! I'll never forget the scream! Sean said "they'll never touch my plants again!!!" Yes, boys will be boys...

Depending on where you are in Tampa you might have luck with Mango, Lychee, Sapodilla, or Sugar Apple. There are dwarf or "condo" versions of these trees that are ideal for smaller back yards and might allow you to plant more than one. Mango and lychee in particular are evergreen and add a great tropical look to the landscape. None of these are readily available in the supermarket (the fibrous things at the grocery called "mangos" are weak) so you'd be growing something that is unique and hard to find otherwise. Citrus is popular as well- you can get grafted trees now that have multiple types of fruit on one tree. Good luck!

Hi Jon, I feel like I just took a ride on your lawnmower around your house. The unfortunate thing about your video is we only get a few seconds here and there when the camera points up from the ground to show the house and shed. Landscape design is intended to pull the house and garden together in a complementary fashion. We saw the problems that are most on your mind, but not the big picture. Weeds -- there are several weed killing products on the market. Use one of them that has glyphosate. If you read the label and follow instructions, you can use it safely and be rid of the weeds. Repeated use will rid you of the Japanese knotweed, too. Persistent treatment until weeds are under control is essential. A common mistake is to spray, then let the next crop of weeds grow and go to seed before treating again. If a weed is allowed to grow and produce seed, the cycle is perpetuated. Kill kill kill! Then you're done. About moving the garden -- veggie garden, right? It should be located in the sunniest spot in the garden -- south facing, no trees overhanging, no tree roots to compete with your plantings. (In the video we only see the base of the trees -- whatcha got there?) I hope this won't come off as too harsh, but simply removing debris would really make a difference. The scattered bricks and wood planks, pots and whatever make it look like a yard sale after a hurricane. (yes, I exaggerate) But a tire? Come on Jon. :-) Rent a pickup or a dumpster and haul it all away, or put it away in the shed. Firewood, okay, I get that, but split the logs and make a neat stack along the fence with the firewood and nothing else. No random "parts" of this and that. Imagine yourself putting along on a ride-on lawnmower with nothing hidden in the grass, just relaxing and cutting the grass, enjoying your green space. Nice!

fourpaws, I'm glad you're back, too. Follow ups really help tune up these forums. Would you mind taking a picture of your faux lawn from an altitude of about 6 inches, so we might be able to identify the ground cover plant(s) you have? The best time to take a pic is when it's cloudy or overcast, so the Sun isn't casting shadows into the grass. Also it would really help to know where you live, not your USDA Hardiness Zone, but your zip code or the name of the nearest community. It might be that the plants you have are limited to certain soil or climate conditions and not be suitable for others. gg, I believe this forum has a successful record of adapting to the homeowner's preferences. If someone wants the yard of the month, we can help. If someone wants a mix of grassy ground covers to keep the mud off their floors, we can help with that, too. Back in the early 2000s the members here could be a little rigid with their help. I believe what morpheuspa was referring to in his first reply to fourpaws was that he/she did not have a lawn problem, and the primary reason for this forum is to help solve problems. You and morph feuded for years, and you still can't let it go even though he's gone. Really?

I love the trilliums, but my T. luteums I had to purchase. They have done well and gotten larger, but I don't see any offsets, and most of my "baby" one leaf trilliums are probably T. cuneatums, which are most common here in the Piedmont. I have rattlesnake ferns in both sun and shade. When I first moved here I thought they were weeds and pulled many out. Oops!

I've noticed no particular fragrance from the Trillium luteum. They seem to do very well in my wooded area but the summer heat and a three week dry spell forced all of mine into dormancy early this year. I live on top of a chert ridge and short of a little leaf mold the soil in my yard hardly deserves the name. The Trillium seem to do OK in it,

I must confess that about 17 years ago when we first bought the house I had dreams of pathways, rock walls and a native garden at the bottom of the yard. In a year long burst of energy that was only halted by a bout of bad health I seem to remember destroying a number of rattlesnake ferns myself while chasing those dreams

I still have plants down there I have yet to identify so might be posting more pictures of NOIDs.
