Star jasmine with roses and lavender?

I want to plant iceberg roses with lavender along my driveway, but I also want to put in a ground cover to mimic a hedge; it needs to be low in order to allow a car door to open. I was thinking of using star jasmine as I understand it can grow as a ground cover but that it can also be formed into a hedge. My question now is will the lavender look good with the star jasmine and can it grow well together?

Star jasmine can be like a ground cover, but it does have some height. Our plants are usually about 18" high but take clipping to keep them at that height and to keep their long vines from over taking the roses. Except for the need to keep it under control, it is trouble-free. Doesn't take too much water and keeps most weeds down. We have a lot of it.

I'm thinking there must be other ground covers that would be easier to maintain as far as the trimming goes. Also, I'm not sure about a car door being able to open over star jasmine.

If you have it like a little hedge, you'll need to leave a space to go inside the hedge to work on the roses?

Is the area you are planting pretty wide? Remember roses do not like to be crowded by other plants so consider your plants' full-grown sizes when planting. My roses that are crowded have more disease, especially black spot.

Also I'm not sure about the compatability of roses and lavender. I think lavender is a plant that does not like too much water or fertilizing, and roses like a bit more of each.

I guess I've posed more questions here than answered questions, but no one else responded so I thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

Why don't you pose your question over on California Gardening or the Groundcover forum? Especially on CA gardening I think you'd get lots of good suggestions. Don't be shy to post there even tho you think you are new to gardening.

You could also drive around neighborhoods you like to see how others have planted their roses.

Thanks for your information (as well as questions). I did what you said and am now going to plant society garlic and statice with the roses. I still may plant star jasmine (trimmed) or maybe companula or some other ground cover (I will go to the ground cover forum as you suggested for more input on this). Thanks again for your ideas.

I'm way warmer than you are but here's my experience for what it's worth. I've got a huge confederate jasmine (aka star jasmine, I believe) that's 5 years old in a large pot outside. The cold kills most of the outer leaves every winter but it makes new ones every spring. This wouldn't be the case for you, of course, and I mention it only because it's been living in a pot above ground all this time - not planted in the ground, so it is a toughie - up to a point - even though it's a "tropical". I've rooted it successfully a lot. If you can, get cuttings that are not woody - get ones where the vine is still green. Snip off all the leaves on the part you will stick in the dirt, wet it and dunk it in some rooting compound (at all garden stores and not expensive) and into a pot with just good potting soil. Leave only a few leaves on the cutting top. Cover the whole thing with a baggie and keep the soil moist in a spot inside (needs warm temps) that gets indirect but bright light. New roots will grow from the nodes where you snipped off the leaves. (If you tear the leaves off, you could damage the node.) I've also successfully rooted them without the rooting hormone, but using that stuff seems to make it work a little faster. The plastic baggie is to keep its environment damp to avoid stressing the cutting from transpiration/dryness.) Take a bunch of cuttings because not all will root, and you can stick more than one cutting in a pot. Good luck!

Altoclef, I'd say it's a root problem, with the older plants' roots hitting a layer of clay or something that they don't like, do you know what your soil composition is, or do you have any similar problems with older plants up and dying on you? It's also possible that the plants are just hitting the end of their natural life cycle, but my impression is that star jasmine can last for decades, so that doesn't seem right. Do all the plants turn red in winter, or just the ones that die? What's the minimum winter temperature you've been having, sometimes a cold, wet snap can damage the roots. Hope this provides some clues, and we can stop the mysterious die-off before they all go! Jim

I bought a Star Jasmine at the beginning of this summer and repotted it into a large ceramic pot that I would say is about 20 gallon size. I had it on my deck getting morning sun all summer and now that it is getting cold at night I brought it inside. Is it normal for it to shed leaves this time of year? I also read some where that they bloom better if they are some what root bound is this true? If so I am thinking it wasn't such a good idea to plant it in such a large pot. watering shouldnt be an issue, if your house was built properly. from what i remember watching Holmes on Homes, the lawn should be sloped away from the house. or a gravel trench that slopes towards a drain and directs water away from the house. a water/vapor barrier along the outside of the foundation.

Soc. garlic is nice (I have some of that too) but does have a bit of an odor, which I don't mind but others might. I like statice too.

Don't forget good local nurseries (not HD) are a resource for suggestions also. When you go, don't just talk to the first employee you see, ask to talk to someone who can help you with some planning suggestions. It would help to have a sketch of your plot with dimensions.

Good luck. You are wise to put in this time planning and asking questions. It will pay off in your results.
