Have fresh Confederate Jasmine/Star Jasmine
Comments (2)How interesting! I wonder if it would be hardier for me if I grew it from seed, where I want it to flower. I just mailed you some Dame's Rocket seeds today---wish I'd seen this post first! The only 'unusual' vine seeds I can think of having are a few Carolina Moon Seed. Comments (8)I smelled it in an Indian grocery store shelf once and it had zero smell at that point in time. That said, fragrance can be a function of many things including our nose so who knows. It appears that there are products that can enhance fragrance and flavor. One such product is marketed by Plagron as Sugar Royal in Europe and Royal Rush appears to be the US version. It is supposed to have amino acids/protein hydrolysates that enhance resins thereby increasing fragrance and flavor. Comments (3)We trim this star jasmine every 6 weeks back to 4" in front of the trellis. IT never gets more than 6-8" deep from the fence. Makes for a nice green wall, w/o mess. No pools but no mess either. When we trim it, we put down old sheets then use hedge clippers. Pick up the sheets, pick up the mess. Some of the other jasmine varieties grow too fast or only grow up on the top end. Star Jasmine will fill things nicely as long as you prune it back to the trellis to encourage branching. I have to get it before it flowers because the scent is really intense ( plus the bees love it and I don't want to have territory disputes with them). -Babka...See MoreConfederate Star Jasmine spacing?
Comments (9)One Devoted Dame they will be facing Southeast on my fence so hopefully they don't get too scorched. I guess I'm lucky, 'cause my umbrella trellis faces west, literally against a deep red brick wall, and my Confederate Jasmine is beautiful. Never been scorched. And I don't have any shade yet, 'cause my house is in a newer subdivision, and all the trees are relatively small. I'm also in Houston and have black clay too! :-) I'm actually not in Houston, that's just the name of the clay soil I have! ;-) It was between Star Jasmine and Carolina Jessamine and I wanted white flowers. Same here. I wanted a non-toxic, evergreen vine with *white* flowers, and CJ was pretty much my only choice, lol. Also, did yours survive the freeze? "The freeze" referring to the crazy Snowpocalypse we had back in February 2021? Or the more recent smaller freezes we've had here lately? Back in 2021, I took zero chances, 'cause I had baby plants, so I brought them inside the garage. That was the only time I took any measures to save them from cold weather. Earlier this month, when we had freezing temps, I didn't bother protecting anything, since nothing I have is new, *and* we've had lots of rain to keep the still-warm soil wet. Hope that helps!...See Moreanasophia
