I don't know about rooting it in water, but they root easily in moist soil in my basement. No bottom heat or rooting hormone was used. I just stripped off the lower leaves, stuck it, and walked away. They dropped a few leaves, but came roaring back this spring when I moved them outside.

lavender, being tropicals, those will root. re the oversized plants. You can easily bring them down to size by pruning.

Is there any way to cover the jasmine, like the hybrid teas, and help them through a cold winter? I have HT's that are zone 7. I know this is a long shot, but has anyone ever successfully wintered over star jasmine?

The star jasmine are not that big, so I might try it anyway, not really anything to lose :)

Okay, which star jasmine are we talking about? I was talking about Trachelospermum jasminoides, also known as Confederate Jasmine. That's hardy to zone 8. I got one through the winter last year by planting it against a southern brick wall. It lost all its leaves, but came back fine in the spring.

I'm way warmer than you are but here's my experience for what it's worth.

I've got a huge confederate jasmine (aka star jasmine, I believe) that's 5 years old in a large pot outside. The cold kills most of the outer leaves every winter but it makes new ones every spring. This wouldn't be the case for you, of course, and I mention it only because it's been living in a pot above ground all this time - not planted in the ground, so it is a toughie - up to a point - even though it's a "tropical".

I've rooted it successfully a lot. If you can, get cuttings that are not woody - get ones where the vine is still green. Snip off all the leaves on the part you will stick in the dirt, wet it and dunk it in some rooting compound (at all garden stores and not expensive) and into a pot with just good potting soil. Leave only a few leaves on the cutting top. Cover the whole thing with a baggie and keep the soil moist in a spot inside (needs warm temps) that gets indirect but bright light. New roots will grow from the nodes where you snipped off the leaves. (If you tear the leaves off, you could damage the node.) I've also successfully rooted them without the rooting hormone, but using that stuff seems to make it work a little faster. The plastic baggie is to keep its environment damp to avoid stressing the cutting from transpiration/dryness.) Take a bunch of cuttings because not all will root, and you can stick more than one cutting in a pot. Good luck!

It's the star jasmine with the pretty white flowers. Supposed to be okay to 10 degrees. Not to seem dense, but I'm wondering if like zone 7 hybrid tea roses, can I just pile up some dirt around the bottom of the plant, cover it with some leaves and hope for the best? They're not very big (about two feet tall) and I thought if the roots don't die, maybe they would come back next spring.

I do have a branch I cut off (it was still blooming) so maybe I'll try potting that too :)
