I have some 10-10-10 fertilizer. . .
Comments (4)Bob Solberg recommends slow release fertilizer or 10-10-10 granular fertilizer be applied as hosta emerge. If applying only liquid fertilizers, apply weekly as the first leaves start to unfurl. Reapply 10-10-10 about 4-6 weeks later during period of rapid growth....See MoreMgt. says must get rid of trellis & hosta fence!
Comments (18)Marine Wife, I happen to have a piece of (ugly) grey pipe wrap laying around. I have been doing some web research to find a paint which does not dissolve the foam (that would be a water-based paint, oil paint would dissolve it). I will use clear silicon caulk applied to the Adirondack fencing, then slide some of the white-painted foam pipe wrap over the "points" which in reality are not points. They are so blunt, you couldn't pierce anything if you applied a jackhammer to the fencing. The only thing "pointy" about the Adirondack fencing is the INSURANCE GUY'S HEAD. As for the trellis, I had a brainstorm today while looking forlornly out the window at the iron trellis so beautifully festooned with blooming clematis. I can paint some foam pipe wrap either black or green, bend it into a graceful arch like the iron trellis, and string green trellis netting between the horns of the arch. I can use bamboo stakes thrust into the ground as support for the 2 open ends of the pipe wrap foam tubes. It will take more than one piece of pipe wrap to make it, but I could duct tape it together, now that they make duct tape in so many shades. How could they complain about nearly weightless foam arches and nylon netting "causing damage in a windstorm"? Even cat-poop-for-brains people like this could not say that foam flying around could hurt the building, nor trellis netting. Amazon.com has some very lovely green trellis netting that came highly rated. It will be nearly invisible between the arch of the pipe wrap. Can anyone here believe this whole bizarre scenario? I feel like I got off the elevator into the Twilight Zone!...See MoreMust Have Giant Hostas
Comments (19)At risk of appearing arguementive, I have stood in the shade of a very mature Sagae ready for shipping at a growers field. It was root-balled like a tree, and granted the root ball was 3' diameter, the top of the plant was WELL over my head and I am 6'3"+. I was so impressed I bought a young-un which is now in it's 3rd year and measured 15"h x 42"w during a drought. Sagae Blue Angel (mine is still a kid at 21"tall x 51" ) Earth Angel (mine is a baby from Hallson last fall) Regal Splendor (mine is only in 3rd year but starting to stand tall-and gorgeous) Empress Wu (just bought a baby two weeks ago) Krossa Regal (mine is still a kid too! In human age terms not yet legal to buy beer in Illinois) Parhelion: She, KR, and RS will be standing in line for their 1st beer together - but Parhelion is already 24" x 51" Sum & Substance (Mine is mature at 28" x 55") Liberty (Will it get tall enough? Mine is in 2nd spring) If I think of another I will go out and get it (LOL). That is how my list of "Must Have" is defined. I know what variegation I want but haven't pinned down a specific hosta. Just a comment on my hostas heights. Last year I entered a drought in July and no matter how much I could afford to water, they ALL lost 4"-6" in height from earlier measurements due to sagging petiole. This year I am already in my second month of drought. In May and June combined I have had less than 2 1/2" of rain TOTAL. Can I anticipate my hostas would measure taller if they had adequate water? Comments (10)when you read ANYTHING ... book.. web... whatever ... look at the experience of the writers ... IMHO ... grenfell is a premier plantswoman ... in britain ... she has never been to my garden ... in my zone.. with my winter ... so i am careful about her suggestions ... way back when.. i had a database going .... all kinds of info ... and one was sun suggestions... 650 entries... hosta ... so i start adding her sun tolerance suggestions... somewhere around the 350th entry.. i realize i am changing all the entries to FULL SUN .... and .. maybe a little late... i start to wonder.. why she grows them all in the sun... and if i do the same.. they burn to a crisp ... so i look at a map ... mid MI is the 45th parallel ... where is london ... from memory ... 60th plus??? if i lay out in the sun in my yard.. i will be as pink as a lobster in an hour in mid summer... if i laid out in London on the same day .. it might take me a week to get a sun burn ... apply such logic to hosta ... then there is their 10 million inches of rain and fog ... and there lack of snow or freeze in winter .. since they are zone 7 ... 8...9... can you really believe they are that much closer to the north pole.. and significant zones higher than all of us .... go figure ... so one must relate the GROWING INFO to where it comes from... know thy source ... in a recent post... in the perennial forum.. a zone 5 person was getting lectured from a z7 person... how easy it is to winter over roses ... trust me... zones matter ... do you see what i am getting at ... other than cultural info ... grenfell is cutting edge on everything else ... shadrack is a nut.. a personal friend... they go hand in hand lol ... visited a couple weeks ago ... wanting to take pix of hosta for the new book ... unfortunately ... hail and all ... i was bummed ... he is a native Brit .... recently ensconced in buffalo of all places .... for the most part.. he is the photographer .... ken...See Moremary52zn8tx
