how many of you are planting already?

despite this weather, i am itching to plant! i have a clematis in the garage, as well as a japanese maple i bought from a big box store. both are already starting leafing out in my garage.

since i just bought the japanese maple and it is leafing out earlier than most JMs i've seen around here, I'm inclined to wait a few weeks before planting this. however, the clematis vine i consider much more hardy, and i'm really tempted to plant it this coming week when the daytime temperature will be in the high 50s/low 60s.

have you guys started plant your perennials and shrubs outside yet? would like to know (partly to get up the courage to plant my precious clematis since its roots have already reached the limit of the pot)

they are predicting a bit of rain again next weekend (maybe). plus the ground is so soft, it's easy to dig...

Let's see: in the last week, I've planted two blueberries,
a dwarf nandina, a new seedles red grape (that arrived via
USPS from Miller's), two viburnums; I lifted, divided and
replanted Rudbeckia maxima, asters, goldenrod, and aego-
podium; all those leftover potted daffodils and hyacinths
from church on Easter Sunday have been sunk in their new
spots to ripen and settle in for next Spring; hey, I was
on such a roll that I bit the bullet and lifted an emerging
PEONY (an absolute no-no in Spring!) and moved it - still
seems to be emerging six days later - we shall see. . .

In short: START PLANTING! And even if some things didn't
make it (but they will!) it just feels so G-O-O-D to be out
there digging . . . right?

Today (Sunday) I planted 3 types of peas (2 edible podded), got my broc and chinese cabbage in the dirt as well. Also dumped in various seeds - lettuces, beets, etc.

Earlier in the week I pulled back the straw from my strawberry patch - they were green underneath! I also put in the blue berries, black berries and raspberries. Those were all bare root, so I'm not expecting to see much action from them any time soon.

Later in the week as time permits, more seeds go in to the other raised beds - family loves the lettuces which come out of the garden.

Best said by some others is" A clean pant in a clean soil is ideal." Plants that are already clean can grow in more places than it could in an isolation area and grow better. I try to avoid long term isolation over four weeks longer times in isolation can be harmful to a plant. There are exceptions for time allowed IE: If an infected plant shows improvment I will let it stay in isolation If I enjoy it and plant real estate reasons. New plants: I think of it as jump starting a new plant into better health and is the max amount of time a new plant will get in my NEW PLANT isolation area. When time allows ( Usually the same day not more than three) I remove all old soil examine roots while bare then repot any/all new plants. With freash soil in a new & sanitized pot the new plant is usually sucsessfull in very short time. On avg if any poblem does exist on a new plant the time is one week before I have the new plant in a better growing area. Some plants even new plants I have got no days in the isolation area because of the folowing reasons : 1The pest they are subject to getting simply donot exist where I live or other pest that may effect a plant that do exist in this area are not here. ( Think of it as pest control or pest prevention I think I've optioned for the better ) 2 The new plant didn't have a fungus or other problems on inital inspection nor any problems with roots during repotting and root inspection. Prevention includes some plants that I reffer to as sacrifical lambs. When the lamb(s) do well they get the " treatment " with a properly labled product , a make over as sometimes some of the foliage has to be removed, then they go to dinner via a splash of food, watering but in a day or two they get sent right back to the wolves.

Mike, First I want to say, the plants I received, beginning Jan 1, 2010, were in 3-4" containers, bulbs and cuttings. Only a handful were larger, meaning 8" to 1' tall. Total: 58. :) :( Marguest, your Banana Tree is beautiful. The colors amazing. There's even a pup. Did you find it on Ebay? Mike, to answer a few questions. I MUST stay away from Ebay..It's one addicting site. Not only do they have great deals on plants, but plant supplies. There's also a few online nurseries I browse every other wk or so. The internet makes it too easy to shop for such an exciting hobby. A few clicked keys, next thing, a package is at your front door? One word of Warning for those who really want to stop buying plants.. Well, an attempt. Do NOT sign up for nursery News Letters. It's convenient, swaying us to their site, displaying their wares. Hear the clicking keys to Paypal? lol. As for local nurseries, fortunately, there are two that sell very very nice and rare specimens..luckily, opposite directions, both a long distance drive. An hour on non-congested days, 1.5-2 hours during 9-5, Rush Hour traffic. Although, traffic has gotten so heavy the past five years, the only time to go anywhere with time to spare is between midnight and 5am. Problem is, the stores are closed. lol. Our grocery store, Jewel's, always has plants for sale. Mostly, basic plants like Spaths, certain Dracaenas, etc. My problem arises when they have dollar sales. 3-4" potted plants for 1.00. Every so often, they'll have a rarer specimen. Buy 3, pot them up, and you have a lovely plant for 3.00. Four years ago, they had, mixed in with other dollar plants, Schefflera 'brassaia/actinophylla, a plant I hadn't seen in years...last one) I grabbed it up fast. lol. That's about it. Well, I had NO room in the Inn, so to speak, so a lot of the potted tropicals and patio plants went OUT of the greenhouse last weekend. Of course, I had to scurry and gather them up in the sheltered corners of the patio under the big maple tree and throw tarps and blankets over them the last two nights. I also got overly anxious and planted out 12 one gallon astilbes I bought at Lowe's $3 perennial sale a month ago, for the same reason, no more greenhouse room. Had to cover those with pots. Even through the plastic, there was some frozen tissue, but hopefully they'll be OK. If not, the blooms may be lost, but the plants will be fine. Otherwise, I've been waiting. However, I HAVE to get things out of the greenhouse. I need to sow probably another 40 flats of stuff, the warm weather crops mostly -- corns, squash, various flowers. I have ZERO room in there, in fact, I have the central aisle down to a one foot wide corridor with just enough room to walk and water. I also need to STOP going to the Oakland County farmers market and garden centers and buying new, tender plants. I hate getting a backlog of things that need attention and are sitting there saying "well, if you weren't going to take care of me, why did you buy me in the first place." I am optimistic that the worst of it is over. The 6-10 and 8-14 Long Range forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center have us above normal. I hope someone will remind me of all this when I'm covering stuff in late May!

How many pepper plants? How many tomato plants?

last year I did around 500 tomato plants and around 450 pepper plants. This was for 2 farmers markets and a farm store. I will do around the same this year as I am dropping one farmers market and replacing it with a CSA. I am also counting on the peppers doing a lot better this year. Last year 95% of the plants did not get ripe fruit on them before the first frosts. they were about 5 weeks late in setting fruit and I have no idea why. The 100 peppers in the hoop house produced early as they were supposed to but over 75% got sunscald and than bacterial rot. I grow mainly sweet peppers with a mix of hybrid green to red bells (by far the best seller) along with green to orange, green to yellow and purple to red bells. i also do some funky heirlooms for those who like an adventure in food because the taste is generally better than the hybrids. I also do a small amount (less than 25 total) of hot peppers, mainly jalapenos and cayennes as those sell the best for me. Last year I did 27 different types of tomatoes, mainly heirlooms. Red maters are the mainstay but I also do purple, black, white, green, yellow, orange, etc.. I also do around 50 cherry tomato plants (do not go hog wild on cherries as they take a lot longer to harvest than the big maters)

Last week I planted a climbing rose and a clematis. Didn't have to water. Nature did it for me. This week's chore: plant three more roses.

This week, I am planning to put sunflower seeds, and holluhock seedlings in the ground.

wow, you guys are great!

i would have posted a response earlier today, but after reading the first few posts and seeing you guys out there bravely planting stuff (carl, thanks for the encouragement! and andrew, yours was the last post i read) well, i couldn't resist!

so my clematis is planted! no wilt yet so that's a good sign, and tomorrow, i may get around to putting some sedum in.

unfortunately for the beautiful roses, i have too many local deer and since i'm not willing to put up a fence... no roses for me. anyone in union county who wants a "climbing america" rose bush (well, more 2 stems than bush since its deer "accident" last summer)?

I see Alyssum on your list. 3 days ago I saw some flowering plants for sale and almost bought them but thot it was too early. Yesterday I went to Mels in North Brunswick to buy some allysum and he said he had some but he thot it was way too early. Well, I'm going back today and buy one or 2 and plant them cuz my bones tell me there will be no more frost, and I'm willing to take a chance.

Like you'all, i just gotta get planting!

Just wondering -is your list referring to plants you planted or seeds?

My snow peas have been planted for about a month and are now about 1" high. Yesterday I put in my broccoli plants. In a couple of weeks I will put in stringbeans, then after that (May) tomatoes peppers eggplant squash and melons.
It seems that the winter lasted awfully long this year. Sure feels good to be outside playing in the dirt!

Ellen I tried the Winter Sowing idea this year. I have had over 30 milk jugs sprouted before April. Some were seeds over 6 years old. Today transplanted alot of the larger ones in the garden. Winter sowing rocks in NJ.

Even have one tomato plant in two milkjugs casue it has grown so big. Hoping for some May tomatos.

Traded lots of seeds from others on the Garden Web and they are doing great.
