I think they should be grown in your backyard, not in the wild. New York has its own wild huckleberries, and planting the Montana species would be introducing a non-native species. Who can guess what problems might be caused by another non-native plant? In your yard at least you can monitor their progress.

In your yard I'd pick a spot that seems reasonably similar to the Montana site. If you don't have a rocky slope, pile up some rocks and put soil between the cracks to replicate a dry Montana hillside. I'd use a mix of organic material and sand to replicate the soil that forms between boulders in the mountains. I would sow the seed directly outdoors and try to be patient. They might not sprout until next spring. I have never tried, but I bet huckleberries grow very slowly from seed. I think the most likely problem you will encounter is too much summer rain will cause fungal problems with your plants. A rocky slope should help with this problem.

Being from Montana and familiar with the area in which you got your seeds, the weather there is extremely frigid. There is upwards 20+' of snowfall and I am wondering if there are the insects in your area necessary to pollinate the bushes. There are other areas that the wild huckleberries grow here in Montana, I have had the chance to taste them and they don't taste the same as the ones from Glacier Park. Different soil?? climate?? maybe even the scenery lol I bet you had a few grizzlies watching you pick them too, that's why they are so expensive, you have to fight the bears for them.
