Plant IDs for Upstate, NY

Hi,

I have these two weeds and I'd like to know what they are:

The first flowers around now (June) and I don't remember if the second flowers.

I'm around Rochester, NY.

Those are fleabanes (Erigeron spp). I'm pretty sure they're native (some of the species, anyways)

Fortunately the N.p. recurvus isn't expensive or hard to find. Depending on when we move, I'll probably take a clump - I have a lot of them, scattered around the yard. Honestly, I don't recall having so many varieties - I was definitely a forgetful squirrel when I buried them over the past 10 years. . . . I am really excited about the peonies - they've had time to establish now, and they should start to really perform this year. I'll be happy to post pictures when they bloom; a few already are setting buds on top of their foliage. I have a variety - singles, Japanese, doubles; heirloom and modern; darkest crimson to creamy white. I'm anticipating them as much as the daylilies. Oh boy!! Well, at this point I'm concentrating mainly on getting the garlic mustard out and only pulling others when they're right in with the GM. Hopefully the 2nd isn't as prolific as the GM, or I'll be in another world of hurt next year! I'm still dealing with the remnants of Jerusalem artichoke as well! Yeesh! OH BTW - could #1 maybe be an Actaea? I'm really hoping not to have to pull it - I've got a bit of it in there and it's actually kind of pretty in a group - I'm gonna keep an eye on it, and see if it blooms and what they look like.

My low maintenacce plants are mostly hummer plants and most unfortunately are annuals for us here in NY but many will self sow and give me a new crop the following year. Agastache rupestris does very well and is hardy. Is drought tolerant even in the sunniest, hottest driest location. It is deer and rabbit resistant and blooms from mid summer to frost. Tall garden Phlox (paniculata) does beautifully and gets big and bushy and requires little care other than water in extremely dry spells. Lobelia cardinalis blooms from July to frost or close to it with copious blooms that the hummers love. It does like boggy areas Penstomon barbatus coccineus is heat and drought tolerant and will bloom all season if spent flower spikes are removed and is rabbit and deer resistant Many salvias are maintenance free and require very little water but most of the best ones are annuals for us. Some of the best are: Salvia coccinea, Salvia subrotunda, Salvia guaranitica, Salvia reptans and Salvia greggii. The S. reptans and greggiis can be perennial in the right location with well drained soil. Silene virginica is a wonderful woodland native that is hard to find here even though it is a native. I had to get my start from seeds from a Canadian gardener and a grower in Arkansas. It blooms in late spring for quite an extended period of time Coral Bells is another perennial that has an extended bloom time if you keep the spent spike removed Aquilegia canadensis is an early blooming perennial that takes care of itself. One of my ealiest bloomers. Silene regia blooms July and August with tall whorles of red star type flowers. Can grow about 4ft. tall but is maintenance free. Another that is hard to find locally. now I know what brugs are LOL angel trumpet or as they call them in germany trompetenblumen, I have one of those too . I am just terrible with names, someone asked me what my monarda is called and I didnt know thts beebalm, anyway its called raspberry wine now thta I checked . I went to the day lily farm sale this weekend and brought all my day lilies that I didnt have a name for for plant identification, I reintroduced myself as the lady that can't remember names LOL Angeltrumpet, a spike I brought in for 4 years and hibiscus How do you winter sew, I have grow lights and have started some things fromm seed for the first time this year, this is really only my third year gardening . I weeded all weekend long in the morning, by the whell barrow, I am getting roundup for along the edges, I don, want to pull another creeping charlie out of the rocks

Thanks jimbobfeeny. Are the other ones ones you recognize? They look similar but they don't flower (as of now)(my Dad insists they don't flower). Feabanes is good to know.

The second one looks like the goldenrod in my backyard. It doesn't bloom until very late summer.

Ah you're right. That may be goldenrod. I do have some goldenrod. I will have to post new pics if there are ones that look like goldenrod but are not.

I also agree the first is fleabane and also come in pink but is shorter. The other is a goldenrod . there are several ones some smaller and I think a bite more manageable in the spreading. Both are nice and the goldenrod helps to tie together one of our beds with the "native"end of this longsloped garden. Both are easy to remove and or transplant Lois

Nothing against Ithaca or 7song, but there are ones closer to home - and in Rochester itself, if you are looking for plant identification walks. I live in just southeast of Rochester and know that for a fact. Been on some and lead some hikes. The Upstate Gardeners' Journal would be a great source for finding listings of such classes and hikes. The UGJ is a very cool free magazine that you can read from their website.

But if you do take the 2+ hour trip to Ithaca from Rochester, be sure to add the Cornell Plantations to the list of things to see. Great place if you are a plant lover.
