Finally bloom time in Upstate NY

It's taken me a while, but I finally have some pictures uploaded to share. My bloom season was off to a slow start, so I've waited until I have a handful of blooms to share. Here are some I've enjoyed:

Matt (this is his 3rd or 4th bloom - the first ones are always splotchy and not worth sharing)

Mary Todd (FFO, a true bright yellow, loaded with scapes and buds every year)

Golden Chimes (FFO, off to an early start this year)

Night Beacon (always one of my favorites)

Border Crossing (FFO, so its form will improve; one of my favorite true pinks)

Clementella (a Stella child, more apricot and open in bloom - I like it much better than Stella)

Morri (strong veining, but not as clear a pink as I'd hoped it would be - it's a little muddier than this picture shows, more peachy, but it's quite vigorous and generous with blooms, so I've kept it)

And finally, a pleasant yellow seedling - good texture and nice form, and apparently weatherproof. I have a few other seedlings blooming, mostly yellows/peaches, but they're not doing well in the weatherproof department, so they're not likely to get to stay. I have MANY more seedlings that ought to bloom soon, but I can only keep 10 or 12 if I want to have room to plant more seedlings next year. I'll have to be pretty ruthless.

Great photos, Laurel. Mary Todd has always been one of my favorite yellows -- don't you love those "banana buds" on her?

I think I would take more into consideration what kind of room your have around your container garden. Hybrid teas are really easy to grow in pots because you prune them down to green wood each spring. Rugosas and other Hardy roses you don't prune will just get bigger and bigger on you and not be good for a pot soon. As far as cold goes, If your containers are large enough, and you can protect them from wind and sun scald, I think you will do fine. My mom grows her roses in pots in zone 4. She pushes them over to a fence for wind protection and throws straw over them making a mound. She loses few roses- no more than anyone growing them in the ground in zone 4. her pots are 20" or so. Be sure to water them until the ground freezes. Drying out and severe temp changes are the hardest things to survive. (going for balmy 50s to single digits in a day or 2 can kill a rose). I am in 5 b and I had a dozen roses overwinter just fine in little 3 or 5 gallon pots this winter (several were bands from last year- several were Austins). I ran out of time creating a new bed for them. I just dragged them to the foundation of my house in the most protected corner and throw pine needles on them. I lost zero (tho our winter was not harsh at all). I have 3 that live in ceramic pots (24") and they have managed 3 years that way. I make sure they are able to receive moisture (rain, snow) by not putting them under the eaves. If you can find them, I recommend own root roses. Northland Rosarium carries roses for our zone and they are all own root and they have all kinds. They are bands... but they catch up in year 2 or 3 to the other HTs. I have a 2 year old Stephen's big purple that looks almost as big as the other older plants. I recommend him. I have several Austins both grafted and own root. I think I would pick the Austins that are least likely to have an octopus habit (no Gertrude Jekyll, no Abe darby). Lady Emma Hamilton, Jude the Obsure, Tamora, Tradescant are the ones I have that I think would be good in a pot. I was thinking about getting Princess Alexandra of Kent and Young Lycidus for a pot too. I am planning to grow Baronne Prevost, Madame Isaac Pereire and a few other old garden roses in pots next year. I think they should do fine. (I would avoid polyanthus, chinas, most musks) Buy what you like and give it your best shot is my advice. I was just thinking - there is a long time poster here who lives in zone 4 and she grows so many many roses and does not winter protect and they do fine. In New Brunswick, I'd be waiting until the first frost in the fall. The leaves will turn black after that. Then, I'd dig the whole plant up, and cut off the top. Clean them up; let them dry; separate if you can; dust with a fungicide, label them as to variety; wrap in saran wrap or recycled plastic shopping bags; put into paper bags; put into a cardboard box covered with newspaper; and store in the cold cellar for next April. Then in April, you lay them out slightly covered with a growing media; pot them up once they've started to sprout; give them some light outside, but be prepared to take them indoors when it is cold; and plant after ALL danger of frost has passed. Did I miss a step? Seems like a lot of work, doesn't it. However, the reward is definitely there.

Moving back up, with more pics: Fairy Tale Pink (from tweetypye last year - THANKS AGAIN!) Looking Fine (FFO, and my pic makes it look more lavender that it really is, so I'll have to try for a "truer" pic later; it's got huge, vigorous fans this year, after being a newbie last year) Evening Harmony (it obviously likes blooming in a container; it was totally UGLY when it bloomed (EVERY bloom) last year, and I almost gave it away. I'm glad I gave it another chance.) Bacon Gold Nugget (A better pic than I got of its FFO; the longer I have this one, the more I like it.) My first seedling ever, which bloomed last year and looked NOTHING like this. It's got scapes like a redwood tree. Mantis, I've had SC for 3 years. It spent the first 2 years in a pot. I finally found a place for it this past fall, so it is still adjusting to being in the ground. It has put up a lot of foliage and several scapes. The jury is still out. I may have more to say next year. David

First, I want to compliment your photography - clear vibrant pics. I really enjoyed seeing your daylilies, especially your seedling. It is getting a nice edge on it. Please show us more pictures as it matures.

What beautiful pics. That veining on Morri is very prominent. Your seedling is just wonderful. Who are the parents?

3 of the new plants I put in a month ago have bloomed and others are sending up scapes with lots of buds so waiting to see what they will look like. I guess buying from sellers here in the north was a better option for me this year.

Good to see what's going on your way! Mary Todd is quite the bloomer here, too. Your seedling looks nice! It'll be fun to see which ones you decide to keep...decisions, decisions!

So fun to see the bloom season moving northward. I figure I am just past peak now as I have some that are done and am still waiting on some later ones (thank goodness for them!).

That picture of MATT is stunning. Did you post pics some of that daylily last year? I seem to recall that name somehow from some pics last year.

Thanks for the encouragement, friends! I've had more fun with that digital camera, lol. My kids have made comments to the effect of, "Yeah, Mom's in the garden with the camera AGAIN!" Yes, I've posted 'Matt' and most of the others before, but I have some newer, later-blooming ones I haven't posted before that haven't bloomed yet. I went on a pink/lavender kick last year, so I'll have some variety. 'Mary Todd' sure does make the most banana-like buds, and BOY is she setting a good crop this year.

The seedling is 'Happy Returns' (pollen) x 'Border Crossing' (pod). I was aiming for a long-blooming pink, but you just never know. I did get one clear light pink out of the seedlings so far, but I need to see it bloom a few more times to decide if I want to keep it. I wasn't impressed at first glance. The ugly ones are easy to cull; the in-betweens will give me problems deciding which to keep.

I have Morri and it is a little less pink than your photo, but your photo is beautiful! I really do like this one. I tend to love the veining in any of my daylilies. Your photos are really great. Keep having fun, it only gets better! Mona

I agree, Mary Todd is a super bloomer in my garden, too. No wonder it was a Stout Silver Medal winner in 1978!
I'm going to have to get my hands on Morri with that strong veining - very unique!

I'm also in upstate NY, so I've been waiting not-so-patiently myself. I just got Border Crossing last year and it's still a week or so away from blooming - I can only hope that mine is as gorgeous as yours. I have Clementella on my wish list - looks like a definite purchase for next year. i'm going to go add Night Beacon to the list now.

Thank you for sharing your lovely daylilies. Your seedling would sure be a keeper in my garden. I have not tried to cross any yet, but I think I am going to give it a try. Please post more photos as your DLs bloom. They are really popping here in PA now.

A few more from today:

Zagora (very tough and vibrant - it's growing among maple roots. . . .)

Streaker (very peachy for me, but still a nice bloom)

Big Show Off (huge blooms, but short scapes - not my favorite combination, so I might be giving this one the heave-ho)

Dancing Penny (One of my favorites, a tough oldie, blooms early and long)

Seedling - a huge peach-rose monster that bloomed this AM, so this is its FFO. Wowee, I think I like this one!

Seedling again - my first true pink, a bitone. Comments?

Todays blooms are just great. Streaker is my favorite with Zagora a very close second. I always did like the pictures of Matt, that why I remember it as a returning favorite from last year.

I have a few more to share today - the weather is lovely this morning, although I wish we'd get some rain.

Hyperion, FFO - a wonderful oldie

Unknown, from a White Flower Farm mix I bought years ago. It reminds me of 'Siloam Ury Winiford.'

A dark bitone seedling, FFO today, tall and sturdy. I love the dark, wide petals. We'll see how it develops.

Yet another yellow seedling. Pretty; I'll watch it. I can only keep so many "pretty yellow seedlings"! I'd rather have a handful of different ones to keep. The extra yellows can go grace my friend's farm. I have a muddy dog seedling, too - gotta get a few of those just by the law of averages, I suppose. Not quite as homely as the legendary "Doody Pants" and "Brown Trousers," but definitely not "AHS Next Top Model" either, lol!
