thinking about a swap late May-early June

last year there was an excellent swap in New Brunswick thanks to Ellenh, in July.

Would people be interested in a swap in Montgomery Twp (south Somerset county), or vicinity? I was thinking May or early June because everything is up that's coming up; nothing is too pot-bound yet and transplanting is easier.

I guess we should probably continue discussion on the exchange page so I will open a thread there but I wanted to get people's attention here first.

Hi Lisa,

Count me in! Last year was so much fun. I'd love it if we could do one every year. Just don't make it the weekend of May 21th. I'll be going to a swap in Arkansas. Where were you planning on holding it?

well, rats, Ellen, the 21 was my top choice, because I have to leave out Mother's Day and Memorial Day weekends. June 4 is a possibility. I was planning for a local park.

Are you going to Arkansas in order to swap or are you there anyway and taking the opportunity.

Well....I spoke too soon lol. Unfortunately the GA Gardening forum also scheduled their swap for the same day of May 4th so I won't be able to attend the AL one this year =( Was looking forward to seeing some of ya'll again, maybe next year they'll be on different days. They were originally talking about the end of April but the date's set now and I already had obligations for that one. You all have fun and post pictures of all your goodies! Danielle

Early Oct. sounds good...when can you set a date? If the weather doesn't go south just before the date, I'm contemplating a big change in part of my backyard's layout that will involve digging out a number of plants. I'll try to list some of those items just before the trade date. Tom, it seems there's always a "left behind" item to help keep us in touch...lol. BTW, you have email!

You might have to start your tomatoes early, and choose early varieties for May fruit, but it can be done. Beans, if started early, and early varieties chosen again, for the first flush of production, might be good. For later production, there's a variety, Dragons Tongue (flat yellow, purple blotches, purple disappears in cooking), that is one of the best tasting beans going. You might be able to grow peas for the May period - I find that the snow and sugar peas can take more heat then the "English" shelling peas. As far as flowers go, do you get enough winter cold for peonies? There probably are a bunch more flowers, but not knowing your climate, you might do better to go and ask the cutting forum for advice; they are good about it!

Late May and very early June roses

Charles Darwin is larger than it says on HMF, and has the octopus arms some Austin roses are famed for. It is mostly thornless. It is only that color in the cool and damp weather of spring and fall. As it get warmer and drier, it becomes more apricot, and in the dry heat of 90-100 degree weather it is mostly pink. I haven't had much trouble with disease, but I do give an occasional sulpher or copper soap bath. (On the other hand, that doesn't stop some other roses from blackspotting all the time.)

I'm going just for the swap It's going to be a three day affair - lots of fun. An old member of GardenWeb - GardenGhost (Casper) is hosting it. We've become good friends & I really don't want to miss it. I have a number of other friends from across the country that are also coming. You're welcome to come if you feel like travelling.

I expect to come home with some great stuff and have a great time with my friends. Yes it's a long way to go, but I'm really looking forward to it.
