There are quite a few viburnum that grow in and around wetlands. Some that come to mind are Arrowwood (Viburnum dentatum), Wild Raisin (Viburnum nudum) and Blackhaw (Viburnum prunifolium)

Thanks for the post. I'm going to update with some pics later today. But, I waded out today to get pics and discovered it took root on top of a fallen tree trunk. So it really isn't in the water at all!

Yep, I find Viburnum nudum living (in the wild) in standing water with no problems.

Could be Viburnum rafinesqueanum based on USDA records and the look of the leaf.

I agree. Viburnum dentatum is similar but it does not occur as far north as MN.

Wow-I've never even heard of this species before. Looking at the plants data base, it isn't shown in my county, but almost everything I find isn't in the data base.

I have a number of Viburnum cassinoides (Wild Raisin) that have been growing in standing water for many years.
I have seen them in the wild, growing on seepage slopes.
I understand they are classified as a wetland species, along with other Viburnum species.

The flowers really smell bad, though, did you sniff it?

I did a sniff test-it wasn't too offensive to me.

dandy_line, the data in the USDA PLANTS Database is incomplete. I often find plants in my county that don't show up on the USDA maps either. Their information is based on voucher specimens held in herbaria. If no one has specimens from your county on record it won't show up there.

If you examine the enlarged base on the style of a flower closely it should be smooth in Viburnum rafinesqueanum and pubescent in V. dentatum.
