Need Help Identifying

I am in the process of completing a local plant collection for a western North Carolina local flora class. I have seen this plant in the woods on several occasions, but cannot find a name for it. I have heard that it is called privy hedge, apparently because it was used at one point in time to surround outhouses (the privy). The plant that I have is about 12" tall, with ~1" oval leaves alternating sides up the stem. I have checked a few types of privet hedge that are supposed to live in the area but I can't find an exact match. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
