I guess it depends on what you want. If you don't really care...for instance, just want 'yellow' daffodils, then buying locally is probably fine. Most local sources from big box stores to local nurseries (around here) sell mixes...which is what you get, anyway. Very seldom do you get a correct named variety. I collect daffodils, so it matters to me. After years of buying, I am very picky. I joined a local daffodil society and am making my third order with them. Very pleased... they procure bulbs from specialty growers around the world. Btw, now is a great time to be thinking of what you might want to plant (in the fall). I always order now...and then the bulbs arrive at the right time in fall. Remember for the little bulbs, like crocus, glory of the snow and scilla that you'll need a bunch to make a show. You'll be so glad (next spring) that you spent a bit time (and $$) thinking about this now. I love spring! Hi Pngwin21, I too have been looking for on line veg, for the same reasons as you, in the UK we can buy things called plug plants, which are delivered to your home in a sort of gel stuff, I concluded that the reason for the lack of these companies is that a) no market (although thats two of us know so maybe we should start a business! haha) or b) the huge delivery area of the US and this can impact in a couple of ways, one the plugs would take so much time to arrive they are ruined (cannot tell you how long it took me to understand the lack of delivery in 48hr here)and the increased weight would of course mean extra postal charges. c)in the uk you order by November I think it was, so they know the demand and can plant accordingly for the same date troughout the UK thus cutting cost, the US has so many zones this maybe a logistical nightmare, although computers could solve this! or D)they just haven't thought up the idea yet! although I find that unlikely! that said, no t bar on a shovel! and runner beans as a flower! anything is possible! I would as now is the right time, cos I am about to start posting my spare seedling, try Craigs list and join freecycle, you are supposed to collect but if someone explained that they couldn't drive I would make my husband take it round, if at a reasonable distance from our home, offer to pay for gas, also do churches, scout groups that type of thing do plant sales?, look out for them and in the UK I also used to pick up loads of free seedlings at the end of peoples driveways, which they had left out as FREE, people may do that here? I intend to as well as craigs and freecycle. last sugestion, walk the neigbourhood pinpoint who has a garden, introduce yourself and ask about the local conditions, pest ect and then tell them you problem, gardeners seem a pretty generous bunch on the whole and I bet you get a bucket of plants and good advice, I got another Veg patch from a neighbour this way, she can't tend it this year and I just give her a share, fantastic! hope I manage to grow something! Hi All Brandon, Love the list, you should post that every time this question comes up. We have ordered from many of these companies and I agree with your list. Personally Nourse has some of the best plants you can get. We ordered 150 Polana Rasp and they were great, we picked about 100pt off of them the first year. The asparagus roots (all 1000 of them) were huge! easily 12-18" long and I think every one came up. We also got several varieties of rasp from Hartmann's and they were very good also. The only bad plants from Hartmann's were the rhubarb, they were pale and died, they replaced them and the same thing was sent. I would definitely order from them again, just not rhubarb. Jake

Hi folks, thanks so much for your feedback. I should have clarified I was looking for 1 gallon versions. There are bigger ones available, but not the smallest ones. I did check out the other local nurseries, including home depot, but they're out. The younger the plant the easier is for it to survive in my yard. Ideally there'd be some homegrown seedlings available, but I don't know how to get in touch with someone who may have started a batch for sale. Any ideas? I could start a few myself, but have time only to water! Amy
