Good online source to buy Podocarpus gracilior?

I have 10 on order at my local nursery. It's been several months and they do not know when they will receive more. I am now looking into ordering them online. Does anyone have experience ordering them via mail and have suggestions?

Monrovia Nursery, one of the largest wholesalers in the state carry it. You can use their website to locate a nursery near you who use them. With that large an order, I'm sure any nursery would special order them for you from Monrovia.

If you're in the Bay Area, surely there must be dozens and dozens of nurseries that carry these. They are pretty common I think. Even Home Depot probably carries them. I'd go the easiest route and call from the yellow pages before going the hassle of mail order...

Hi All Brandon, Love the list, you should post that every time this question comes up. We have ordered from many of these companies and I agree with your list. Personally Nourse has some of the best plants you can get. We ordered 150 Polana Rasp and they were great, we picked about 100pt off of them the first year. The asparagus roots (all 1000 of them) were huge! easily 12-18" long and I think every one came up. We also got several varieties of rasp from Hartmann's and they were very good also. The only bad plants from Hartmann's were the rhubarb, they were pale and died, they replaced them and the same thing was sent. I would definitely order from them again, just not rhubarb. Jake

Thanks! Yes, we do have lots of other trees (these will be 3-5 trees out of about 25 total in the backyard) so not too worried on that front---but we didn't have many good candidates for screen trees that were evergreen, fast enough growing to mature in ten years' time, and not likely to turn into problem trees (e.g., get far taller than 30', drop excessive litter, etc.) We do also have a Jervis Bay Afterdark peppermint tree (Agonis flexuosa) and a couple of fruit trees along the border where these will be, but the peppermint tree isn't expected to get tall enough to screen too much, and the fruit trees are either deciduous (fig, cherry) or not likely to get tall enough (feijoa). Would love other suggestions of good candidates to mix it up a bit, though! We need trees that will: - Reach 25' but not exceed 40' at a max (densely developed urban area, so we want tall enough to screen, but not so tall as to block out all of the light---trees that can be easily pruned down are fine); - Be evergreen; - Thrive in the San Francisco Bay Area climate (dry summers/wet winters, moderate temperatures rarely below 40 or above 80); - Tolerate clay soil with mediocre drainage and be drought-tolerant once established; and - Grow moderately quickly. We are also planting near a retaining wall (5' in), so they need to have root systems that won't grow under and destroy this. Our local nurseries came up with podocarpus, pittosporum, bamboo with containment, and acacia. We are wary of bamboo and acacia but potentially willing to give them a try. Can't do eucalyptus in our area for fire reasons. Other thoughts more than welcome---thanks!!

I feel your pain with the cost of lighting and I hope this may help a bit. I just ordered from lightingdirect.com but in the past used Bellacor for our exterior lights. I switched to Lighting Direct because they offer coupon matching as well as price matching. I shopped around for the bathroom light I wanted - wound up to be $318 everywhere. I found a 10% off coupon from a competitor, asked LD if they would match and they sent me this link: http://www.lightingdirect.com/index.cfm/page/browse:category/categoryID/8283?intcmp=smlsplshcompcoupq109#homepage_ad Instead of the 10% I wanted, they had a 16% coupon listed that I used. 16 is a goofy number but it saved me $50. What is a good source to buy fig trees online?

Like the above poster Suzi AKA Desert Dance said are you sure you lost your trees. Example i put a potted 10 year Hardy Chicago in ground out in the open not near any structure with just some dry leaves at base few winters back it died to near ground level and produced a few figs . Then what everyone was calling the polar vortex came for a visit along with heavy snowfalls but the cold came first again it died to near soil level but produced some figs late in September going into October. I did lose some potted ones that were stored in attached garage . Give yours a chance if there inground they just may sprout near the soil level come sometime late June. I have dealt with raintree nursery and edible landscaping long time ago and had no problems just not sure if things are still the same or not. Here is Hc Jan 2014 the temp was 19 below zero here as mentioned it died to ground level but came back . I could protect it but it was put there to see what would happen otherwise , i have spare in containers. Martin

I work in the nursery business and I agree with what everyone else said. It's a common tree and shouldn't be that hard to obtain. Check around at some other nurseries.

Also check the indoor plant section. I just bought a container for $1.25 at a local Fred Meyer (Kroger) that had five separate seedlings in it. It wasn't labeled as to what it was, but it's an easy plant to identify.

Hi folks, thanks so much for your feedback. I should have clarified I was looking for 1 gallon versions. There are bigger ones available, but not the smallest ones. I did check out the other local nurseries, including home depot, but they're out.

The younger the plant the easier is for it to survive in my yard. Ideally there'd be some homegrown seedlings available, but I don't know how to get in touch with someone who may have started a batch for sale. Any ideas? I could start a few myself, but have time only to water!
