Bad news first: If it seems totally crispy, I would be concerned that your Norfolk Island Pine may have died. Are any of the branches moist and flexible, or do the branches all seem dry and easily broken? It might help if you post a photo of it. Good news: The plant in your picture looks to me like what is often called a "Golden Pothos" (aka Epipremnum aurea). They are relatives of philodendrons but actually are not philos. Check this link to confirm its identity. The good news is that pothos are very tough plants that can survive a lot. Your pothos doesn't look to me like it is dying. I think it was just sunburned because its leaves were not adapted to such intense light when you put it outside. Sunburn is ugly to us but it doesn't really hurt the plant. The soil it is in looks a bit heavy and moist, so you want to be careful not to overwater it. The risk is that it might develop root rot if it is in a heavy soil that stays soggy too long. I personally do not put my houseplants outside because there is a risk that insect pests may find the plant outside. However, I'm not sure that is such a big deal when you only have a couple of plants, since it is easier to get rid of pest problems on plants when you only have one or two than if you have a lot like I do. Many people do find their plants grow better if they get a summer vacation, and they just spray the plant with a pesticide before they bring the plants inside during the fall to prevent insects from coming in with the plant. If you do decide to summer your plant outside, many indoor plants will do better if you start them off in a shady place outside, because even a shady spot outside is brighter than the level of light they received indoors. Once they are used to being in the shade you can move them somewhere sunny. The brown parts (the burned parts) will not turn green again, but over time it will grow more leaves to replace the brown ones. One nice thing about pothos is that it is extremely easy to propagate. You can clip off one of the longer vines on it (make sure you get a piece that has at least one brown nubbin on the stem - the brown nubbins are where roots forms). Put the vine in a glass of water, and put it in front of the window. Eventually the vine will grow some roots. I would recommend taking some cuttings so that, no matter what happens to the original plant, you'll still have some of it. Pothos cuttings can actually live in plain water for a pretty long time, so you don't have to be in a rush to pot them. This post was edited by summersunshine on Sat, May 10, 14 at 12:17

you can NOT drive large machines for building houses.. over the root zone of large trees .. they will eventually die from soil compaction ... but in tree years.. that might be 5 or 10 years down the line. .. so there is little use in saving older ones .. too near to the construction ... so unless someone can define the driving area.. and your contractor will abide by such.. you will be severely limited as to what is useful to save ... i live in MI.. plain old green pines.. not the foo foo ones.. grow 3 to 5 feet per year ... when you start with a 2 -3 year old bare root ... and give them a year or two to get 'established' [and that includes PROPER AFTERCARE] .... and will easily outgrow.. a 5 to 8 foot transplant.. in the first 5 years.. its all about transplant shock ... frankly.. there are NO SLOW PINES ... if i were you.. i would mark out the building area.. and the access driveway ... mark that out.. remove everything nearby.. and one of the tree pro's will have to delineate that distance for you [they can confirm scot above] .. and stake and police tape it all off.. it will look rather comical during construction ... and then perhaps.. expect to lose a few more ... and it is actually good.. because you dont really want dying trees falling on your new house.. and that would be the beauty of planting new.. nearer to the house ... the death rate of moving 20 footers would be extreme.. even if you paid the best of the biz to move them.. its not a DIY type thing IMHO .... and i bet it would cost tens of thousands of dollars ... in theory.. anything can be done.. its just budget and las vegas odds ... or extreme heavy labor [like that one guy at the link .. if you use the search in GW.. you might find his other posts by searching his GW name] .... which is not my game.. but maybe its yours ... now.. if you were doing a log cabin.. and were going to do it with a horse to drag in logs.. with no basement.. maybe we can save more ... but you didnt give us any facts in that regard.. so we are left to ponder large machines.. etc... so.. Cuddy, That's a tough loss. How many are you having shipped this go-round? Your pic indicates a high desert climate. What's your annual precip and have you had a soil test done? Austrian pine are not particularly xeric, especially when establishing. I tried something similar last year on a much smaller scale, with Doug fir, Ponderosa and Pinon pine. They were seedlings I potted up into 1 gallons in Tapla's mix, then buried in a holding area. We had a cold snap in April that froze tulips, followed by 104 degrees the first week of June. I lost all but one Ponderosa seedling. I found it very difficult to accurately monitor the moisture in the pots and compensate for the drying winds and altitude.. Lesson learned for me was to not order more at one time than I can plant in ground and properly care for. I do think the plants coming from different climates than mine had an impact, too. Is there a county extension service in your area that sells seedlings? That would be a great place to start finding the right trees for your area. If the plants are coming anyway, I would skip the potting and plant them in ground. Better luck to you this time!

june isnt the best time for planting conifers ... minutes before the heat of summer ... but based on that planting.. its all related to transplant shock ... i wouldnt be thinking disease ... but it sounds like you did great with watering ... half mulch.. half rock ... better than a sharp stick in the eye .. i am wondering if that wall retains heat in winter... S or SW facing??? .. did you protect it from direct sun for a week or so.. after planting??? where does the prevailing winter wind come from ... also in regard to that wall ... is it protected by the wall ... or does the wall funnel right past a plant in winter sun ... you are the second to mention winter watering ... its a very foreign concept to me.. i dont do that.. where the ground freezes solid ... and i am wondering.. how much water.. a dormant tree needs ..????? does you ground freeze solid in your z5???? .. if so.. you should not have been watering .... boy.. if i guessed.. i wouldnt have guessed that was a mugo ... but then.. i am not into the science of IDing ... you need a seller with a better reputation ... mail order from such ... ask for the manager ... and see if you get the same nonsense .... this was exactly why you got a warranty .... i would give it another month .. to see if the buds are alive ... then make a decision ... its planted rather close to the house.. for its potential ... those leaders grew what looks... 6 to 8 inches last year ...laterals.. maybe 6 ... inside 5 years.. it will be on the house ... a replacemtn should go at least 3 to 5 feet further away or you need a plant with less potential ... do understand.. whether a plant is called a dwarf or a mini ... its all about the annual growth rate .. all size estimates are at ten years.. in the conifer world.. and at 20 .. you can presume it will be twice as big ... by looking for how much it grew last year... you can generate an annual growth rate .. and do your own multiplication .. if you want to search out mail order plants.. i have had a lot of luck with conifer kingdom ... call them.. and describe your spot.. if you get overwhelmed with the website ... unless you bare rooted the plant ... you do not know if it was root bound ... back two or 3 pot sizes ago ... did you amend your planting hole.. in your clay?? you have to at least wait.. until the local pines bud out.. before you will know much of anything ... here in my z5 MI ... that is weeks from now ... ken
