My plants dont look at home here, I'm sad!

Well my name is Julie and I am 24 yrs old, but Ive always been around plants and animals my entire life. I dont own my home yet, we are looking to buy acreage one day just not yet. Ive been planting and learning things on my own, but sometimes I think I get in a little over my head ( and packet) sometimes. I dont want to do alot with this house considering its not mine. I love big colorful plants, greenery has to be thick and attractive not ugly and gross looking, like theres too much in one spot. So far Ive had pretty much a container garden here I have some house plants ive had for two years and they are great but I had to split those as well.

I just wanted to know from anyone some tips on how I could make a better garden for my self with containers. Maybe theres something I can do to help my plants look more at home rather then just being put anywhere, I hope you guys understand what I am getting. I should have some pictures soon to help maybe.

First off, welcome. =)

Second, I would suggest meandering on over to one of my fav. threads, Container Gardening. Pictures always help as well. I would love to suggest some things, but I would need to know some details first, such as: light, how much time you want to spend on them, specific colors, etc.

I do believe I understand what you are looking for...a more homey feel. So different textures, varieties and fullness would be important, as well as placement.

I'll keep a look out for a reply either here or in Container Gardening. =)

Well as far as light goes were are on a corner lot of an acre we get full hot sun. Practically everywhere. Good rain most of the time. I spend alot of time outside so time on them is not a huge issue. I just want palnts that are lush, big bloomes, smells great, and beautiful. The only things ive planted so far are some tulips, sumnflowers, and cosmos, and a rose ( yellow) everything did good, I got rid of everything last year because we thought we were leaveing, well Im not gettin rid of anything anymore because were going to stay here a couple more years and I can move everything with us when we do leave ( just have to make the movers and the hubby work harder, hahah)Here a few pictures, In one you can see my rose in it but its ot doing anything yet of course its new.....

hello fellow newbie i am also new here i just discovered this forum through shear dumb luck i have never been too much of an internet person really but have been eating super spicy foods since i was a kid and am addicted to chile peppers this is my first year growing chile peppers and i have some in the ground and some in pots, most i bought as seedlings from nurseries mostly boring stuff, jalapeno anaheim cayenne banana pimento, but i also have started habaneros tobascos thai fresno a bhut jolokia and a medusa from seeds i started this year w/ 18 and now im up to 67 a little ambitious for my first year probably, but as most of u here know chiles are an obsession. to all out there that post thanks for all the tips and advice i have enjoyed reading ur posts

Selling my car and I'm SO sad!

I had to sell my 1996 Honda Accord about a year ago. It was getting too many miles and too many years for me to feel confident about driving any distance. I just loved that car. It took me to work and home without a complaint for all those years. It was the first car I chose and paid for totally on my own. It was just the right size and "zip". When I got it all cleaned up for trade in, I hid some lucky pennies in it so it has a good rest of it's life. I now have a newer Honda Accord and I cannot warm up to it. It is nice to drive and has all kinds of bells and whistles, but it is so big compared to my old car. I just don't feel like I can whiz around town in it the way I did with my old car. Waaahh, I want it back!

cindy_7 I wouldn't count on me being right about any of this! Though in my defence it would appear that basil can taste a bit minty, according to what I read. That said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if my minty is another person's turkey! Also the tag that came with the pot said mint and spearmint, after tasting one of them I didn't question what the tag said. : / Here's some pics of the dethroned (remove from pot) mint/basil, it doesn't look too healthy and these photos were taken after I removed a good number of dead leaves. The sage and thyme look great though, aside from some minor yellowing. I've had to pot them together, as I don't have enough space otherwise. And the mint/basil I have carefully laid aside, after moistening the roots and having a good look at it. I'll be honest, I doesn't look long with this world! I'll place it in a pot on it's own this evening (UK time) and hope for the best for it. floral_uk You're like a human almanac for the UK plant-life and all it's need-to-knows! How's your kid's tomato plant hanging in? The weather this end has been cloudy and very cool in the morning then very hot and dry for the remainder of the day. That must have an impact of the taste of them, I would think? Hope they're doing well. :) Oh, and yes to the Kale. I'll be growing it to cut and come again purposes only.

When we were building, we put our house on the market and sold it the first week. The buyers needed to close within 90 days or lose their quoted mortgage rate so we closed in September although our house wasn’t going to be ready until January. We rented our house back from them but here’s the deal with that. Unlike a normal renter/tenant agreement, we would have been responsible if anything broke, such as furnace, stove, etc. When January came, our new house was not even close to being ready but the owners wanted their house. It was hard to find housing for less than a year lease but we were lucky our builder had another development of apartments that we rented for five months until our house was ready. The stress was incredible, moving twice during that time and we had to put most of our furniture in storage. This time, we just bought a condo and now have to list our home. I’m not sure which is more stressful. I wish you luck on your move.

Some things I did when I knew my garden was going to be temporary were:

1. Planted expensive perennials in movable containers

2. To "camoflage" the containers, I planted easy to grow, inexpensive annuals - usually seed paks, around the base of the perennial planters.

Check out the Annuals forum for easy things in your zone, some will re-seed too, so you don't really have to treat them as "annuals" since they come back from the seeds they drop on their own.

In my dry winter zone 7 a lot of things probably re-seed that might not in your area, but here a list of some of my "aggressive" re-seeders:
Alyssum
Morning Glory
Honesty (Lunaria)
Nasturtiums
Monarda/Bee Balm
Amaranthus (Love-Lies-Bleeding)
Hollyhocks
Sweet Peas
Coreopsis
Nigella (Love in a mist)
Oregano (the herb)

By planting these, you can get some quick color and plants this year around your planters, and if they successfully re-seed, then the plants will keep coming back. If the landlord complains, you could always claim ignorance and say that you only planted annuals thinking they would only be around the year you planted them :P

Oh thats great! lol....:) The funny thing is last year I put down mulch in the pictures, and moved and cut back everything, the people who rented before us they didnt do anything they were young but lazy, weve know our landlords before we moved in they are friends. They really dont care what I do. The only thing is I feel like they want me to make this place look great for the next batch of renters, but I dont have the pocket book for it and Im not doing it even if I did. It's not my house. You know what I mean. Its kinda dumb to throw your money away.....
